The artist's perspective, by Tomas Herron: I came to the Drawing & Sketching class with over 50 years of self-taught drawing experience behind me. You might think if someone had been drawing that long they would not have a need for such a class. Well, within a couple of weeks of guidance from Rob Kelman, I began to see aspects of my work which definitely could be improved upon, and I discovered techniques that helped me bring my subjects to life. My drawings are still predominantly centered on nature, mainly wild life, birds and big cats in particular. However, recently Rob encouraged me to venture into a wider field of subjects such as the one chosen as this month's ''Artist of the Month'." My love for the old west found me searching for photographs of broken trail wagons and abandoned western cabins and I eventually came across a scene of a cowboy mounted in full western regalia. I chose to concentrate only on the area shown, leaving out the upper body of the cowboy and most of the horse. I felt this was a more interesting subject. If you were able to visit the Art-O-Rama event during June, you would have seen a selection of work drawn by myself and my fellow students, some of whom have had very little exposure to drawing. However, the work we all produced had great merit and were submitted by the individual students. No piece was specifically selected in order to display perfection. What you saw was normal completed work from a group of artists who enjoy the experience of drawing and each other's collective company. The Art-O-Rama has generated interest in our class and I would suggest, regardless of your drawing abilities, if you have a passion for using a pencil, come to the Craft Room and visit us." ~Thomas Herron We meet Mondays 10 am to 12 pm and Wednesday 6 to 8 pm.
