15 | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | September 2015 | The month of September has been designated National Preparedness Month. This has been chosen as a time to focus on personal and community efforts to prepare ourselves for emergencies and disasters, both large scale and smaller, local events. We know that emergencies can happen unexpectedly, and the speed and success of recovery from them is directly related to how well we are prepared for them. To assist you in your personal preparations the EPC and The Gas Company will host an Emergency Preparedness Forum on Sat. Sept. 19, from 10 am to 1 pm. This event will give you an opportunity to check-out what resources and products are available to you, have questions answered, and grab a bite to eat with your neighbors. Please see the flyer regarding this forum. It will take place in front of the Lodge, and in the Ballroom. Your Emergency Preparedness Committee and our CERT leaders and members have been preparing for The Great American Shake Out, which will take place on Thurs., Oct.15. at 10:15 am. Recently there has been an effort to raise awareness nationally of the reality that there are major fault lines in several areas from coast to coast. This emphasis on earthquakes stems from the fact that we still have little predictive tools that can warn us, and their is great destructive potential compared to other disasters that can occur! This is a good time to check your residence for possible hazards. Be sure to strap heavy furniture (TV's, entertainment centers, china cabinets) to a stud in a wall. Home Depot, Lowe's, and Harbor Freight have a selection of earthquake preparedness supplies. They would be happy to assist you with your selections. Check your medications, water, and non- perishable food supplies. Also, make sure that you have an emergency information form completed, and that your remote relatives and friends have a copy of any evacuation plan you may develop. Be sure to keep your vehicle fuel filled to at least half full in case there is a major emergency or extended power outage. The last place you will want to be is in a long gas line (Remember the 70's?) Again, please update your Roaming Patrol number to (951) 202-4603 and set it up for speed-dial if you have that feature. This is especially important if you are a walking enthusiast or living alone. Don't be caught unprepared if a personal emergency occurs! For more information about the Shakeout, see www. shakeout.org/california/ for details. The EPC sponsors our Street Captains program, which meets every fourth Monday at 6:30 pm, in the multipurpose room at the Lodge. We are fortunate to have experienced and knowledgeable leaders and have practical training exercises to sharpen our skills at helping others. We are a friendly group and welcome new visitors, so come join us and see what we are all about! Emergency Preparedness Committee John Tarabochia doing his part for the 3rd Annual Recycle/Reuse Day. Lots of electronics and household items were collected.
