22 | sun lakes lifestyles | sePteMBeR 2015 | Yiddish Culture Club The Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah, which literally means "head (or beginning) of the year," is thought to be the anniversary of the creation of Adam and Eve and the realization of mankind's role in God's world. This year, Rosh Hashanah begins on Sept. 13 and is the year 5776 on the Jewish calendar. The first 10 days of the Jewish New Year are called the "days of repentance", and are very important for Jews everywhere. The tenth day is called Yom Kippur, "the Day of Atonement," and is the holiest of all days in the year. Holiday services are punctuated by the blowing of the Shofar, a ram's horn, which has many meanings – one being that the shofar is like an alarm that calls on us to examine our deeds and correct our ways. During those first 10 introspective days, Jews write letters to old friends, make long-forgotten phone calls, and attempt to clear the slate of wrongs and slights they may have caused others. On the last day, Yom Kippur, many fast until sundown, and pray that God will inscribe good health, prosperity, and happiness for them in the Book of Life for the coming year. Join us Sept. 9, at 6 pm in the South Clubhouse for a special celebration of Rosh Hashanah, including a complete catered holiday dinner.
