Scams to fleece seniors! How many articles have been written? How many of our friends or neighbors have been taken advantage of and have given money to the con artist? They will never stop trying to separate you from your money. We must all be suspicious of phone calls where we do not recognize the caller. Here are some of the scams still making the rounds of our community. You will get a phone call from your grandchild telling you he or she is in trouble, or in jail, or had an accident and needs hundreds or thousands of dollars to get clear of the problem. They ask you to not call their parents (your children) because they don't want to get into more trouble. They will know details of your family, will plead and cry for your help, and many of our people have sent money to bail them out. A few simple questions will make them go away. Ask for a phone number, you will call them right back — insist on knowing where they are exactly — tell them you will try and get the money, call you back in three or four hours. Do not send money to anyone unless you first check it out thoroughly. You will get emails about earning hundreds or thousands of dollars, all you have to do is send them money for a special kit that guarantees you a great monthly income. A foreign government is contacting you because you have inherited a large sum of money. They want you to contact them with your social security number or bank account number to show your good faith and they will arrange to pay you. There are many people trying to prey on seniors. They know we are suckers for a sad story. At times we are like everyone else — we will take advantage of circumstances to get something for nothing. Finally, we have the phone calls from the solar industry or the electric or gas companies. They have all kinds of programs for you to choose from to save money or get rebates. It will never happen! Most of us are too old to get a pay off from the investment in solar power — unless you live to be a hundred and ten. The electric and gas companies want you to participate in plans that will never save you money. This is easy way to ward off any scam. If you are the least bit suspicious, tell them you are busy and call back later — then hang up! Besides, if you have extra funds, I have a birthday coming up soon! These past couple of months we have been blessed with some rain giving the course a much needed soaking. Let's all keep our fingers crossed for more rain in the near future. Fall is approaching us, soon the night time temperatures will be much cooler and the weather will be fabulous for the next few weeks. During the past month we have had some thunder storms come through the Banning area. Because of the nature of being in an area where wind is prevalent the storms can move in quickly. Lightning is a very serious consequence of the monsoon season. As a reminder to all members; when lightning is in the area GET OFF OF THE COURSE! There are no safe spots out on the course when lightning is bouncing around the hills near us. Standing under trees is not an option either. Because of their height; palm trees are susceptible to lightning strikes. So, please be smart, don't think it can't happen to you. Lee Trevino once said "Even God can't hit a one iron" consequently Trevino was struck by lightning later that same year while on a golf course. ~ Mark Burchfield, Course Superintendent Drought and the Golf Course NEW SUN LAKES PHONE BOOK: Any changes or additions or deletions for the Sun Lakes Phone book must be in by Oct. 21 for the 2016 book.
