It's parent organization, San Diego Zoo Global, is the largest zoological membership association in the world. San Diego Zoo pioneered the concept of open-air, cageless exhibits that re-create natural animal habitats. It is one of the few zoos in the world that houses the giant panda. In 2013, the zoo added a new Koalafornia Adventure, providing an Australian experience. The zoo offers a guided tour bus that traverses 75 percent of the park. There is an overhead gondola lift called the Skyfari, providing an aerial view of the zoo. Exhibits are often designed around a particular habitat. The same exhibit features many different animals that can be found side-by-side in the wild, along with native plant life. Exhibits range from an African rain forest (featuring gorillas) to the Artic taiga and tundra in the summertime (featuring polar bears). Some of the largest free-flight aviaries in existence are there. Many exhibits are "natural" with invisible wires and darkened blinds (to view birds), as well as pools and open-air moats (for large mammals). The San Diego Zoo offers much more than the traditional burgers, fries and pizza to eat. While those foods are still available, the zoo's Executive Chef Chris Mirguet offers a variety of cuisines ranging from Italian to Thai. The Sabertooth Grill serves fresh All-American fare. Salads are served with locally grown greens, the cheese is California-produced and other fresh vegetables and proteins are locally sourced when possible. The result? A fresh, filling meal you can feel good about eating! Lunch will be on own – on site. The activity level of this trip is very high as there is a considerable amount of walking. Carlsbad Village Faire Sun., Nov. 1, 8 am – 4 pm, $22 pp. More than 100,000 people will take in the beauty of this seaside city while browsing through unique booths, indulging in delectable eats and enjoying family entertainment when the largest one- day street faire in the nation returns in November. Each year, the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce hosts the faire in May and November. Now in its 41st year, the free event has grown to be so popular that it not only continually attracts people from all over Southern California, but also from other states. Some visitors even plan their vacations around the bi-annual event. "The reason so many people return to the faire every year is that they can count on finding quality items to purchase because of the wide verity of vendors, you name it and its for sale at the faire." Just like at past faires over 900 vendors will sell everything fathomable, including clothes, accessories, plants, household products, art, antiques and home décor. The international food court will once again feature more than 50 booths serving everything from Thai to Hawaiian cuisine. The Rotary Club of Carlsbad's beer and wine garden will entertain fairgoers with a large screen TV and live bands. The Kiwanis Club of Carlsbad will continue it's more than 25-year tradition of hosting a pancake breakfast at the Carlsbad railroad depot.
