27 | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | October 2015 | From the President – Gerry Edmonds: On Aug. 11, the Golf Club conducted its annual charity golf tournament benefiting a deserving local organization. As reported earlier this year, The Sunshine Team of Hemet Four Seasons was selected by a unanimous vote of the Club's board of directors to receive proceeds from this year's event. I am happy to report that we were able to raise $3,000 to support this great group. Events such as this are the result of commitment and effort by many individuals. Space prevents acknowledging every individual that helped to organize, prepare, and conduct this special event; however, several "shout outs" are important to make. First, The Sunshine Team, not just for what they do for our community at large, but for the outstanding goodie bags and door prizes they provided for the event. Their enthusiasm and effort both prior to and after golf made this a very special day for the participants. Second, Fabian and Elliot Yaeger worked especially hard on behalf of both The Sunshine Team and the Golf Club to ensure this was a well-coordinated event. Third, I would like to thank all the participants in the event that also made this a special day. Especially gracious were those participants who donated their winnings to The Sunshine Team. Finally, I would especially like to acknowledge an anonymous donor for their special contribution. This member of our Golf Club generously donated over $300 so that the total donation would round up to the final amount. Lastly, as we move into the final quarter of the year, I would like to remind you to save the date for the last banquet of the year. The date is Nov. 11 and the event that evening is, in part, to honor the winners of the Founders' Cup and Club Championship. In addition to the traditional dinner, games, and door prizes, there will be music as well. Please plan on attending. From the Tournament Chair – Dave Balser: October is Club Championship month with three rounds of golf on the 6th, 13th, and 20th to determine Champions in all four flights with rewards to Low Gross and Low Net. In addition, our club will be sending the Low Gross and Low Net winners to the prestigious SCGA Tournament in Palm Springs. Our club representatives must have an index of 24.4 or lower to be eligible. Only the cumulative total score of two out of three rounds will be counted so it will not be necessary to play all three rounds. We will use the SCGA index report of Oct. 1 in all three rounds. Oct. 27 will be a two Person Scramble Mixed Flight, so plan on putting your team together for this fun event. Please contact me if you have any questions. (760) 436-6139 or dbalsertournamentdirector@gmail.com From the Membership Chair – Debbie James: The Hemet Golf Club welcomes new members Ralph Perdomo and Susan Ahlswede. We are now 167 members strong. Fall is just around the corner and there is nothing more beautiful than Hemet golf course! Come on out and enjoy the outdoors, Tuesdays at 7 am you'll have a blast! Questions...call Debbie James at (562) 706-1077 or e-mail me at dndjames@hotmail.com From the Rules Chair – Melody Lewis: With Halloween just around the corner I thought I would share some golf "superstitions and oddities." Enjoy! • Color related superstitions: Tiger wears red on the final round of any given event, Paula Creamer wears pink and uses pink tees and balls, Rickie Fowler wears his ever present orange on the final day. Lee Trevino was once quoted that he will never use yellow tees when he tees off because yellow is the color of cowardice. Many players of all levels have stated they will not use red tees because they equate red to danger. • Coin related superstitions: Jack Nicklaus will never play a round of golf without three coins in his pocket…any denomination. Chi Chi Rodriquez also carried three coins in his pocket, a quarter, a buffalo nickel and a gold coin. He would mark a birdie putt with the quarter, an eagle with the nickel and if things weren't going so well he'd use the gold coin. Davis Love won't use any coins minted after 1970 so he uses pennies minted in the 60's. • Equipment related superstitions: Ernie Els will purposely throw his ball away immediately after making a birdie claiming all the good luck has been sucked out of it. Ben Crenshaw will only use balls with the numbers 1 - 4 on them. Using anything higher would equate to a higher score. Zach Johnson uses a homemade marker made by his wife every round. And then there's Keegan Bradley. Keegan might be the most superstitious professional athlete in the world. From marking his ball heads up only, to taking his hat off to scratch his head after every missed putt he has become quirkier with every event. It was recently reported that he still hasn't unpacked his suitcase after the Ryder Cup in 2012. Oddities: Loch Ness, Scotland 10/13/09 Hundreds of golf balls found in its depths by researchers hunting for the legendary monster. Kingston, West Sussex, England 10/11/09 A pro at the Coombe Wood Golf Club is visited daily by the pigeon he rescued on the course. Dryman, Stirlingshire, Scotland 10/8/09 A man accidentally killed his mother-in-law with his tee shot on the 3rd hole at Stathendrick Golf Club. continued on the next page
