What a wonderful time of year to be reading a good book. I admit I say this all the time and don't know what I would do without books. For me, books are friends. It makes waiting for appointments at doctors so easy and I never feel alone if I go out to lunch without a human friend. Even though the holidays are upon us it's 96 degrees today and still October. I do have a suggestion for a new holiday tradition to embrace. Let's all buy a 2015 book, hardbound or paperback, to use as down time when things feel stressful, then donate it to our library! Our hardbound selection is fantastic thanks to our residents. Please remember that all of our books are donated by you. I don't know if you have looked at the copyright dates but we are very current. A couple of years ago we had to make the decision to donate hardbound books under the year 2000 to the Hemet Library. Then we made a rule that books under the year 2003 would be donated. We may need to move the date up. The library committee will decide that. We need to be able to shelve as many current books as possible. Keep them coming. And, a big thank you to those that bring them to us. The paperback books are accepted from 2011 to 2015. Four years doesn't seem like it would fill the cabinet but we actually have an over-flow situation. The rules are in use just to have the largest amount of reading material available for you. Each time I am there to work there is always a book or two snuck in without a stamp and certainly not within the years accepted. Too funny. Our magazines are a different story. I write about them each month but they still disappear at record speed. Many years ago we had a card table that was provided for magazines. TONS of magazines were brought down from any year and they would fall off and make a mess on the floor. While working on solutions to improve the room and create a "real" library we were approved a magazine rack. Enough magazines are donated but many are taken at one time and not returned. Four Seasons resident, Barbara Hughes, presented us with a subscription of Redbook magazine and they are never there. Help us please. Bring September, October and November to fill the beautiful rack to share with other residents. We have audio books, both CD'S and cassettes. The cassettes have become obsolete and we will donate most of them downtown but please think about donating audio CD'S. Do remember that there are numerous movies on CD that you can check out at the front desk. They (management) have a list that you can peruse and make a selection. Please return the two copies of 6 Days On A Raft as soon as you are done reading the book. I bet residents are lending it to other residents before returning but it would be nice to have at least one copy available. Until next month, happy reading. Volunteer Scotty read The Big Miss: My Years Coaching Tiger Wood Hank Haney's candid and insightful story of his six-years as coach to Tiger Woods. You can find the book in our Library's miscellaneous non-fiction section, located on the right-side top shelf. From 2004 to the spring of 2010, under Hank's coaching Tiger won more than a third of the tournaments he entered, and six of his fourteen major titles. The book is loaded with detailed information about Tiger's golf swing throughout his career, and naturally, more so during his time working with Hank. The book describes the training techniques used and the many nuances of Tiger's swing. It's incredibly interesting, especially if you play golf. The one insight that I found most interesting was Tiger's obsession with being a Navy SEAL, which resulted in many serious injuries that took a toll on his body and ultimately his golf game. If you are really interested in golf, especially how it is played at the highest levels of the game, then The Big Miss should be required reading.
