15 | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | November 2015 | November's Tip: Remember to check your medications, water, and non-perishable food supplies. Make sure that you have an emergency information form completed, and that your remote relatives and friends have a copy of any evacuation plan you may develop. Also, be sure to keep your vehicle fuel filled to at least half full in case there is a major emergency or extended power outage. The last place you will want to be is in a long gas line (remember the 70s?!?) Again, please update your Roaming Patrol number to (951) 202-4603 and set it up for speed-dial if you have that feature. This is especially important if you are a walking enthusiast or living alone. Don't be caught unprepared if a personal emergency occurs! Your Emergency Preparedness Committee and our CERT leaders and members had been preparing for The Great American Shake Out, which took place on Thurs., Oct. 15 at 10:15 am. We also participated in the Annual Car Show, and we hope that you dropped by our booths to check out what is being done to prepare and assist our community should a major disaster occur! As always, the emphasis on earthquakes stems from the fact that we still have little predictive tools that can warn us, AND the destructive potential compared to other disasters that can occur! We here at Four Seasons have it better than most neighborhoods. We have a large percentage of residents who are active in various events and organizations, and have come to know each other. We have a large number of active and retired residents who have had experience in the military, medical, public safety, communications, public utilities, and management sectors. What we need is a planning and resource identification program so that we can respond quickly and effectively to any event at any level of severity. To accomplish this our EPC and Street Captains programs are dedicated to creating and updating these plans. We still need more Street Captains. The Hemet City Fire Department suggests that ten percent of the population should be CERT trained. We should have about 200 to reach that recommended level. We have identified nearly 60 trained, and there are probably many more that have had CERT related training in other communities, or in the jobs they held before retiring. When they contact you requesting information about any special needs, skills, or experiences you may have, please respond quickly so that we can survey our resource availability. Please remember, the worse time to ask "What can I do?" is at the onset of an event. Because, having to tell you what to do takes up valuable time that needs to be spent actually doing what needs to be done. You are encouraged to attend our Street Captains meetings, join in to get some training, and support our community in any way you can. You don't have to commit to "join" anything – though you more than welcome to. We meet the fourth Monday at 6:30 - 7:30 pm in the Multipurpose Room. Just "TIVO" your favorite (football?) program, and, as Monty Hall used to say, "Come on down!" Please make the time to become "part of the solution, not part of the problem".
