32 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JANUARY 2016 Please join the Book Club at 9:30 am on Tuesday, Jan. 12. Our first book discussion of the New Year will feature The Art of Hearing Heartbeats by Jan-Philipp Sendker. When Julia Win's father disappears one morning without a trace, on the day after her graduation from law school, her family is left unsettled and confused. It's not until a few years later that her mother finds a piece of the puzzle — an unmailed love letter to a Burmese woman named Mi Mi. Intent on solving the mystery and coming to terms with her father's past, Julia puts her career and her life on hold to travel to the village where Mi Mi once lived. Her journey takes her to the small mountain village of Kalaw, where she is approached by a man who claims to know her father, and who seems to have an uncanny knowledge of Julia herself. Intrigued, she returns to meet him every afternoon and listen to his incredible tales of her father's youth — of his childhood blindness, his education at a monastery, and, most of all, about his passionate relationship with a local girl. The Art of Hearing Heartbeats is a magical and uplifting tale of hardship and resilience, and the unyielding power of love to move mountains. "And so there must be in life something like a catastrophic turning point, when the world as we know it ceases to exist. A moment that transform us into a different person from one heartbeat to the next." - Jan-Philipp Sendker February's Book Club selection is Circling the Sun by Paula McLain. All residents are welcome at all our meetings, even if they haven't read the book under discussion. For further information, please contact Doreen Sanders at (951) 769-1913. ~ Alex Woodcock Book Club Four members of the Writers' Club wrote and presented their story of a memorable Christmas at the Celebration of Light on Dec. 4 and 5. For only a few more days - since the deadline is Monday, Jan. 4, the Writers' Club is holding a contest for all residents of the Four Seasons to submit a written answer to the question: What was your most memorable New Year's Eve? It can be written in one paragraph or on one page, funny or sad, inspirational or disappointing. You may submit it by email to josephlaurin@Verizon.net or postal mail to 1528 Green Creek Trail, Beaumont, CA 92223. There will be prizes. Remember the deadline is Monday, Jan. 4. The winners will be announced at the next meeting of the Writer's Club on Tuesday, Jan. 12, at 1:30 pm in the Lodge. ~ Joseph Laurin Party time: What can you do on a Saturday evening to meet with friends or make some new ones? I know what you can do on at least one Saturday night a month. Come down to the Lodge Ballroom after 5:30 pm on specified Saturdays, check the Breeze or call the Lodge front desk to verify which night is karaoke night. Yes karaoke night. I am proud to say we put on a heck of a show. This is not your bar room Karaoke, where a bunch of drunk guys get up and try to sing, OH NO. We have a group of pretty darn good singers who sing songs across many genres, some of which are bound to please your musical palate. Our last karaoke was a blast, for three hours from 5:30 pm to 8:30 we ate, drank, sang, danced, visited and laughed. If that ain't a party, I don't know what you'd call it. We invite you to join us on Saturday night Jan. 16 at 5:30 in the Ballroom, It's Party Time again! Oh, and did I mention it's FREE! (Just provide your own food and drinks) Oh ya, and you don't have to sing, but you're always invited to give it a shot. ~ John, Jerry and Dave "The Karaoke Herdsmen" Writers' Club Karaoke On Tuesday, Jan. 12, at 10:30 am in the Lodge Ballroom, the meeting of our group will be an encore of Windows 10. Our own Larry Workman will present tips to help with the new version of Windows and answer questions from the audience. He will also talk about how to remove programs with RevoUninstaller (freeware). In addition, Larry will explain how to setup a standard user account for Windows 10 computers. For security purposes, it is helpful to set up a "Standard User" account. This is the account that would be used to prevent unwanted programs, toolbars, features, malware and major changes from being installed onto your computer without your knowledge. Potentially unwanted programs (PUP's) features or malware can only be installed when you are logged into your "Administrator" account. The presentation is FREE and visitors are welcome. ~ Phil Jaffe Computer Technology
