26 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | MARCH 2016 | Yiddish Culture Club On Wed., March 9, at 7 pm the Yiddish Culture Club will feature "An American Story." This short film explores the personal experiences of generations of newcomers who settled in and built lives on Manhattan's Lower East Side — America's iconic immigrant neighborhood. It tells the story of the Tenement Museum which has brought the Tenement at 97 Orchard Street back to life and intertwines the stories of the history of many of our ancestors who landed in New York City - The Germans, the Central European Jews, the Irish who came in waves because of the Potato Famine, and the Italians. Experience immigrant history at one of the most visited early historic sites in NYC which focuses on America's urban immigrant history. This building, built in 1863, was home to nearly 7,000 working class immigrants who faced challenges we understand today; making a new life, working for a better future, starting a family with limited means. Founded by historian Ruth Abrams with co-founder Anita Jacobson in 1988 the building is a time capsule that looks as if people have just picked up and left. Since we are a nation mostly made up of immigrants from every spot on our round world we should all enjoy this remarkable site. The film will be followed by discussion and a "Getting to Know You" member segment. We hope everyone will come to enjoy this most interesting piece of history that is available today. Members are free, guests are $3 pp. Coffee and cake will be served. Info., Diane, 769-0130. Calling all men! Does the "Heart of your Heart" inspire you to sing?
