| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | MARCH 2016 | 37 This year's Tennis Executive Board voted that all 90+ year olds can join the tennis club for free. We are happy to report that one Sun Lakes Resident took us up on that offer. His name is Norm Greenwald and he is 96 years old. He is from New York City and has lived in Sun Lakes for 16 years. He has played tennis for 45 years. He thinks tennis is the greatest game to play and sees it growing in Sun Lakes. Tennis Pop Tennis Since the recent formation of our new club, we are happy about our growth from both old and new residents and our own Sun Lakes tennis players. We were pleased with the great reception we received on Activities Day from so many nice people who stopped by our table to learn more about "POP" Tennis. We believe the onstage demo by our players did much to exhibit the fun we have playing our game and we thank all our members who helped in promoting our club. A special thanks to Nick Arico who offered free lessons as well as demos for the new state of the art paddles being used. The Feb. 20 party, which was held in the South Clubhouse, was our inaugural event for all our members, friends and guests. We will provide more about that event in next month's magazine. We are proud to announce that we have been in contact with President Ken Linder from the USPTA (US POP Tennis Association) and have been given an endorsement and rights to use the association logo for our Sun Lakes website. Fellow member, Scipia Curtis, beautifully designed and crafted our club site so please check it out. It has all our scheduled events, calendars for the year, players' photos, as well as some great links for game rules, player videos, et cetera. Our current days of play are Mon., Wed., Fri., Sat. at 10 am; Tues., Thurs., Sun. at 8 am. Evening play is 5-7 pm on Tues. and Thurs. (subject to change on DST). We will have clinics for our new players who signed up on Activities Day and hope to have the dates posted soon. In the interim, please feel free to drop by the courts (visiting guests welcome too) on our scheduled days of play, and know that we can provide paddles for your use. We have all levels of play among our players, and anyone who joins us will find a fit for their game. We are primarily about the exercise and fun and just making new friends. We ask players not wear heavy perfumes or colognes as it agitates those with allergies. Info., Jeannie, 845-8817 or Sally, 263-5908. Join our group and practice with us from 12 to about 2:30 pm in our Monday through Saturday open play sessions. There is no cost to join our group. To maximize play, we select partners from those present. To keep things interesting, most like to play for quarters. The group also has six teams that play three 11-13 week seasons per year, beginning in early September and ending in late June. Each Thursday, six teams compete in our Billiard Room and one away tournament is played against teams from either Four Seasons or the Sand Trap Sports Bar & Grille. Team participation is not required, but group members may want to join a team for any of those seasons. These team games are one-on-one; no partners. It costs $15 per season to join a team and compete in the weekly matches. Like handicaps in golf, players establish individual skill levels, which helps even out the competition. Not sure if you want to join? Come play with us, or just watch. Get to know us and the game we play.
