2016 has started off with some great events! But never fear, there are many fun events lined up for the remainder of the year. MAY 7 – TACOS AND TEQUILA – OLE! Time to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with the YAH at the South Clubhouse. Doors open at 5:30. This event will include a meal of tacos and other Mexican fare. BYOB and glasses. The band Suave will provide music for your dancing pleasure. If you plan to sit with a table of friends, checks must be submitted together. Cost is $15 pp. Get your checks in early, as seating is limited. The deadline for signing up is April 15. Drop off your checks at 1030 Oakland Hills Dr. Barb Asaro is the contact person at 845-6475. JUNE 18 – MUSIC UNDER THE STARS - Join us at the Main Clubhouse (driving range) for music, dancing and eating under the stars. YAH will have an area for members. Our group is open to all. We meet the second and fourth Monday of each month from 10 am to noon in the Main Clubhouse in the Multipurpose Room. The purpose of this group is to empower visually impaired people to live fulfilling lives. On Jan. 11, the Guide Dogs of the Desert will provide an overview of this program. On Jan. 25, Patricia Russell from OVAC will provide updated information on equipment. A fun meeting will be held on Feb. 8. Mary Cardas, owner of the Savory Spice Shop,will take us on a journey of spices and show how they heighten our sense of smell, taste, and touch. During a recent interview with a few of our club members, they were asked the question, "Can you reach into the past and tell us what invention changed your family's life and added to your life story for future generations?" Andy G. said it was the refrigerator. He no longer had the job of mopping up under the ice box, which held a big block of ice that leaked water all over the kitchen floor. Plus this new appliance was great for storing his mom's delicious potato salad. Edna C. remembered the happy times that the invention of the Philco radio brought with family nights around the radio. They all really enjoyed listening to The Shadow on Saturday nights and Sergeant Preston of the Yukon and his dog King — "on King, on you huskies!" on Sunday nights, plus Fibber McGee and Molly and Hopalong Cassidy. Art M. said it was definitely the bicycle that took him and his brother to school every day and then on trips around the neighborhood hanging out with friends after school and on weekends. Oh, the places they could go in Des Moines, Iowa.
