34 | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | May 2016 | By Micki Rosen, Four Seasons Beaumont resident Did You Know? DID YOU KNOW THAT MAY 12 IS LIMERICK DAY? There was a young fellow named Lear Who invented limericks, we hear, So now we converse In humorous verse On limerick day every year. Named for the Irish city of Limerick, this much loved verse form was popularized by Edward Lear and could date back as much as 500 years. Its distinctive meter and aabba rhyming scheme lend themselves well to nonsense verse, and so limericks are often childish or obscene. The best ones tend to be both. Celebrate by writing your own limerick! DID YOU KNOW THAT MAY 1 IS LEI DAY? Lei day was officially made a holiday in 1929. The record for the world's longest lei was set at the 81st celebration of lei day in 2008. Unofficially, the lei measured more than a mile in length. Each Hawaiian island has its own lei, traditional to that island and made with flowers, fruit and vines found on that island. Hawaii's lei is the Lehua, made from blossoms of "ohi," a lehua tree which grows on the slopes of the volcano. DID YOU KNOW THAT MAY 6 IS BEVERAGE DAY? What would our lives be without beverages? Even assuming we could survive without drinking anything, could you imagine a world without milk to go with cookies, coffee to go with cake, cold beer on a hot summer evening, or a glass of fine wine with a nice dinner? How would we toast anything on special occasions? Beverages have existed, in one form or another, almost since the beginning of mankind. The first recorded beers were made in ancient Egypt, where it was so weak that even children drank it. However, it is suspected that beer could date back to the neolithic period. The world's first coffee as we know it today is thought to have been made by a Yemeni named Omar in the 16th century. To celebrate beverage day, try a beverage you've never tasted before! DID YOU KNOW THAT MAY 25 IS SENIOR HEALTH AND FITNESS DAY? Senior health and fitness day is a time to explore the many physical activity options that are available here at the Four Seasons Beaumont. If you haven't done that yet, see the listing of activities in the center of every issue of The Breeze and give one a try, or just celebrate the day by going out for a walk around our beautiful community. Low- impact, non-competitive regular exercises such as stretching, walking and swimming are designed to increase strength and flexibility, retain bone mass and lower the risk of fractures, which is all important at our age. DID YOU KNOW THAT MAY 16 IS BIOGRAPHERS DAY? Biographies dominate the publishing industry's bestseller lists. However, biographical writing has not always enjoyed such popularity, and biographical conventions have evolved considerably over the centuries. The modern style of biography originated in the eighteenth century and is most closely associated with James Boswell, who undertook an extraordinary biography of his charismatic companion Samuel Johnson – poet, journalist, critic and writer of the first English dictionary. Biographers day commemorates the first meeting of Boswell and Johnson in 1763 in a London bookshop. Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson shaped the emergence of the biography format that is popular today. Talk about multi-tasking! This man is stretching and reading a newspaper in Gucheng Park in Shanghai. Edward Lear
