36 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JULY 2016 So you're a young Japanese American living on Maui in 1938. Your parents work on the sugar plantations. You are hungry most of the time and don't own a pair of shoes. But, there is a school teacher who believes you can be an Olympic champion. This is the true story of the ill-fated Olympic hopeful Maui swim team. It is inspirational, fun, sad, and charming. It is the story of one man and his devotion and belief that kids can be anything they want to be. It is a story of challenge. It is The Three-Year Swim Club: the Untold Story of Maui's Sugar Ditch Kids and Their Quest for Olympic Glory by Julie Checkoway, and our book club selection for July. Join us at 9:30 am on July 12 for a discussion of this interesting, motivational book. A Well Tempered Heart by Jan-Phillip Sendker, originally scheduled for July, will now be our August selection. For more information regarding the Book Club, please call Doreen Sanders at (951) 769-1913. ~ Julie Stayner Book Club Writers' Club Mark your calendars for some useful presentations at the Computer Technology Group. On July 12 we will have a topic that most all of us can use: "Ten Simple Things Every Computer User Should Know How to Do." No matter how savvy you are, there are certain things every one of us has to deal with when using a computer, and we don't always deal with them in the most efficient ways. We will discuss10 things that everyone can (and should) learn to keep their computer fast, safe, and easy-to-use. On Aug. 9 our own Larry Workman will explain: "The Cloud: what is it, and how to use it!" Everyone talks about the cloud, but do you really know what it is and how it can be of a benefit? Larry will discuss how secure it is. He will introduce you to some of the best, and free, cloud storage places for your valuable information, files and photos. Come join us for some interesting learning experiences and suggest topics for future meetings. We meet the second Tuesday of the month at 10:30 am in the Lodge Ballroom. Meetings are typically one hour long. ~Howard Lyon Computer Technology The writers' club met on June 14. Ed Paules wrote the following as the purpose of the Writers' Club. He listed several points: 1. Review others' works with both helpful and positive comments; 2. Share resources; 3. Provide encouragement, comfort, advice, inspiration; 4. Provide solace and help to look past rejection; 5. Help one build self-discipline when necessary; since writing is so solitary, if not isolating, the groups can help one balance priorities when writing competes with other distractions in a community where socializing is a key purpose. Successful writers learn to do both. Thanks Ed for excellent guidelines. These are great for discussion Thanks to Jean Lawrence for sharing her work as a researcher and other materials. Although she says she is a researcher only, her presentation would indicate that she is a writer as well. We thank Mark Parker for sharing his struggles with choosing a protagonist. We are looking forward to tales written by Mark. The next meeting is on July 12. Happy writing. ~ Alda Dyal Chand
