68 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | AUGUST 2016 | Wayne Carlander, 14 year resident of Sun Lakes, passed away on June 7 at the age of 75. Wayne celebrated his birthday on June 5 with his loving wife Dianne and children. Wayne grew up in San Gabriel California, where he played high school baseball, and them moved on to professional baseball. Wayne joined the orange county sheriffs department in 1966. He had a book written about himself and his partner Victoria called Chain of Evidence. It was a true story of the most dramatic undercover operation in California Law Enforcement history. Wayne retired as a sergeant in 1996 after a great 30 years as an Orange County sheriff. Wayne is survived by his loving wife Dianne and by his three children and five grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Wayne was so proud of his grandkids participation in sports and the fact that they graduated college. He always said it would be a boring life with his children and grandchildren. Well Dad, you did it your way! And his favorite song "Take Me Out To The Ball Game!" Thank you to everyone who made my dad laugh and smile. He loved life and accomplished everything he wanted to do. Richard (Dick) Jordahl passed peacefully away June 17, 2016 at the age of 89, from complications of COPD and heart disease. Born in South Carolina into a career military family, he joined the Marines at age 16 and spent five years there. He attended the University of Iowa until the Berlin Airlift when he joined the Air force for two and a half years. He then attended University of Maryland, got married and had two sons. It was here that he became interested in the theater. He made several movies for an independent producer but primarily preferred the stage. He remarried in 1972. They moved from Palos Verdes to Sun Lakes in 1992. He joined various clubs, discovered RVing and cruising. He particularly enjoyed doing Reader's Theatre for the Drama Club. He was pre-deceased by his elder son and his stepson. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Felicia, his younger son, Mike, and stepdaughter Kathy. He belonged to Neptune Society and wished his ashes to be scattered at Point Loma where his father's also were. He will always be remembered for his great sense of humor, which he kept until his last days. Larry Ray Miller passed away on May 24, 2016, in Beaumont, CA at Highland Springs Care Center where he had been suffering from Parkinsons and Alzheimer's for several years. Larry was 73 and was a Verizon retiree. He loved bowling, ping pong and shooting pool. Larry was always known as "a real good guy." He and his wife Barb moved from Beaumont to Sun Lakes in 1996. They were married for 38 years. Larry is survived by his wife Barb, sons Ron and Larry, and granddaughters Jen, Jess and Michelle. Mercedes Ten Napel January 18, 1926 – July 4, 2016. Mercedes Ten Napel passed away on July 4, 2016, at 8:05 pm just as the fireworks were commencing, a fitting closing of her life as she was often described as sparkling, a pistol, feisty, and irrepressible. Roger and Paulette were by her side holding her hands as her breaths became shallow and farther apart until they ceased. Mercedes frequently said she wanted God to take her in her sleep and her wish was finally granted. She is at peace. Mercedes had two disabling falls on June 22 and 24 requiring hospitalization. She was transferred back to her room at Sunrise Senior Living in Rancho Cucamonga with hospice care on June 28. She received excellent, compassionate care from the care management team at Sunrise as well as the hospice staff for which we will be forever grateful. Mercedes was born in Los Angeles on January 18, 1926, to Albert Uribe and Jewell McGlew. She grew up in Los Angeles and Redondo Beach and graduated from Redondo Union High School. She lived in Inglewood, Huntington Beach, and Sun Lakes Retirement Community in Banning. She was athletic and played tennis and golf. While at Sun Lakes she golfed several days a week and competed in tournaments. She made many friends in her 29 years living there and participated in community activities and enjoyed local trips. Although a difficult decision, she realized that she could no longer live alone. She moved to Sunrise Senior Living on February 4, 2016, her home for five months before she passed. Mercedes always worked until the last few years: data entry at Northrup, secretarial jobs, but most of her working career was in sales. She was a born salesperson. Her favorite job was selling window coverings at Sun Lakes Retirement Community. When she moved to Sun Lakes in 1987 (Founder's Circle of the first 100 families to purchase homes), she noticed a need for window coverings for new owners. Soni Mason, a distributer of window coverings, helped her set-up her own business at Sun Lakes. For the next five years as the community was developed, she was extremely successful, frequently winning sales awards. Mercedes was a devoted and caring mother, grandmother, and great- grandmother. Her greatest joy was taking care of her great-grandchildren, Anna and Justin, now 19 and 18 respectively. While Anna and Justin were growing up she would fly to Sacramento several times a year and stay for a week taking care of them. She would always cook their favorite meal of pot roast and vegetables. She attended every Grandparents' Day at St. Michael's School from preschool until Friends we will miss
