| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | SEPTEMBER 2016 | 69 Friends we will miss Robert Kreider, a 17-year resident of Sun Lakes, passed away on August 3, 2016, at the age of 78. Bob grew up in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, where he participated in Track and Field as a miler. He graduated from Penn State University, and five months after graduation was commissioned as a naval officer. The day after commissioning, Bob married the love of his life, Beverly. Their honeymoon was spent driving across the country in a Volkswagen Beetle. Upon arriving in California, Bob started his career with State Farm Insurance, where he stayed for 35 years. In retirement Bob thrived in the outdoors. He spent his time fly fishing, RVing with Bev and family, and volunteering thousands of hours with the Deep Creek Fly Fishers, and the U.S. Forest Service. Bob is survived by his wife Beverly, two sisters, two daughters, and five grandchildren. Bob passed on a legacy of loyalty, service to others, and most of all an eternal love for Bev and his family. Sally (Lord) Lewis, a 12-year resident of Sun Lakes, passed away at the age of 81 on July 5. Sally was born in Clayton, Michigan, and moved to San Bernardino, California with her parents Byron and Ruth Lord. Sally was a life-long resident of the Inland Empire, graduating from San Bernardino High School and Valley College. She was a talented swimmer and competed nationally as part of a synchronized swimming team. She took a break from her studies to raise four children who love and miss her dearly. Sally returned to college and completed a Master's Degree in Psychology and Family Counseling in 1973. Sally worked for several agencies, completing her career as a Mediator for Family Court in San Bernardino County. Sally became fluent in Spanish in her sixties and worked with Spanish speaking families and children in the court system as well. After losing her Waterman Canyon home in a fire in 2003, Sally moved to Sun Lakes and embraced many activities. Sally loved her clay class with Bear, adored Debbie and the water class group, and was active in the Low Vision Support Group with Rita and Richard Skwara. She met her dear friend Albina Villalovas when she became active with the Breast Buddies Group in Banning. Sally continued to use her talents and gifts by serving others as a hospice volunteer and through leading grief counseling groups for children and adults. Sally is survived by her four children, six grandchildren, and her beloved brother and sister-in-law, Jere and Joanne Lord. The family invites Sally's friends to a celebration of her life at the South Clubhouse on Oct. 29 at 3 pm. Fred Clifford Mello, 94, was born October 22, 1921, in Hayward, California and passed away peacefully at home in Sun Lakes, on August 2, 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Mary (Soares) Mello, 12 brothers and sisters, and his cherished wife of 73 years, Margie Theo (Witte) Mello. Fred is survived by his daughters Joan Merritt and Janet Mello; grandchildren South Sharman, Jesse Olanolan, Kaili Olanolan, and Keani Olanolan; 12 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. Fred was the youngest of 13 children (eight of whom lived to adulthood). Before he joined the United States Army in 1942 he married Margie on August 16, 1942, and lived in Oakland, California. Following his service they moved to Antioch, California where he worked with his 3 brothers at Mello Motors. He was offered a sales position with Premier Industrial Corp. (1951) and became one of their top sales and regional managers. Before Fred retired in 1981 he was in charge of the 14 western states including Hawaii. His career also took him to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for over 35 "Months of May" each concluding with the big race on Memorial Day. Fred and Margie and their daughters moved to Southern California in 1959 after a brief one-year stay in Ohio. They lived in Downey, Chino, and Banning (Sun Lakes Founders since 1987). They enjoyed their second home on Kauai, traveling in their motorhome, and taking numerous cruises. Fred loved Indy Car, Golf, NASCAR, and the Dodgers. His family would like to thank all the wonderful neighbors, friends, and caregivers who loved Fred in his last days. He will be greatly missed but is now with his Margie and all is right with the world. Fred and Margie's ashes will be taken to Kauai and a family Celebration of Life is planned for early 2017. Col. Raye Thomas, passed away August 4, 2016.
