14 | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | September 2016 | I'm writing this newsletter on Aug. 9, which is National Book Lovers Day! Summer is almost over but we have plenty of pool time left which usually means reading time. I know most of you are like the committee… we carry books everywhere. Waiting in a doctor's office isn't stressful when you're finally on the verge of finding out who did it. And, if you go to lunch as a single, you are never alone if you are reading. Thank you Four Seasons residents! We have been receiving so many current 2016 books lately. And, great 2015 paperback books. If you haven't been down to our library do come and see what is new. Our hardbound fiction books are displayed from 2004-2016. If they are below the 2004 date we certainly can carry them to the Hemet Library. We accept and display paperbacks from 2011-2015. Have you checked out our non-fiction recently? We have quite a collection and they are once again displayed in alphabetical order. Displayed on the very bottom shelf are travel books. If you are heading to Texas check that section to see if we have current information on the area you're heading to. We have a few children's movies left. We aren't sure why most of them were never brought back to our library. The front desk has many movies you can check out that are appropriate for our younger crowd. A great popcorn evening! If you are bringing books that represent a series we just cannot keep them together. I recently donated my series of Janet Evanovich's books to the downtown library beginning with One for the Money. The book was at least 19 years old. It's really out of date. The magazine rack waxes and wanes. We will have a huge variety and then be depleted all in the same week. If you subscribe to magazines please bring them down. We display three months. July-August-September are current but we also take the older ones downtown. They give them out free of charge. Free is always exciting! Our books on tape have finally all been donated to the downtown library. We could certainly use some audio books on CDs. Don't forget to check out books on CD that we have for your RV trips. Please remember, our library works on the honor system. All books are the property of Four Seasons and have been purchased by our residents. Please respect this. Thank you. Until next month lose some sleep and keep reading that book! Committee member Char reports: The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd For her 11th birthday in 1803, Sarah Grimke is given a special gift, a ten-year old slave girl, Hetty (Handful) Grimke, to be her handmaid. Sarah is horrified by slavery and tries to give Handful back, then tries to emancipate her. Highly intelligent and quick-witted, she also has dreams of becoming a lawyer. All her efforts are frustrated by the limits imposed by her family and by the Charleston society into which she was born. For the next 35 years Sarah and Handful grow up together, shaping each other as they develop a complex relationship. Handful endures great hardship, sorrow and loss, finding courage and a sense of self in the process. Sarah experiences crushed hopes, betrayal, and ostracism as she tries to find outlets for her remarkable intelligence and drive. She eventually leaves Charleston and becomes one of the early pioneers in the abolition and women's rights movements. Kidd was inspired by real-life historic figure Sarah Grimke, and creates a compelling story of slavery and women's struggles in 19th century America. Thanks Char! Try reading an author you've never read before and tell us about it when you visit and we are there working. Until next month… Cookie. Library Committee
