FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | OCTOBER 2016 61 I hope everyone had a great summer and is looking forward to enjoying another cool paddle tennis season. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned paddle player, the Four Seasons Paddle Tennis Club offers a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. In fact, the PTC has designated the first half hour of each play time for coaching and encouraging those who have an interest in the game but have not played it before. You do not need to bring a paddle with you, just come and try the game; and if you think you like it you can buy your own paddle later. Current members may bring their extra paddles and experimenting on different paddles will also help you decide what to purchase later. Please feel free to take advantage of this complementary half hour coaching offer. You never know you may like it! The PTC open play times are M/W/F/Sat/S from 2 to 4 pm and F/S/W from 8:30 to 10:30 am. If you have questions please call Diana Ali (909) 210-9357. ~ Hailu Kinde Paddle Tennis The word "bocce" is plural and comes from the Italian word meaning "to bowl." The game is started by throwing a small white ball called the pallino. Rules are very simple — score a point(s) by getting your ball(s) as close to the pallino as possible. Bocce ball requires players to take turns as a team of four. This makes it an ideal game for socializing in between players' turns. Laughter, cheers and words of encouragement can often be heard. A game win is usually to 12 points. Most often two games are played and take approximately 1 1/2 hours. Cards are drawn for a random mix of players and to insure that no one is left out. Bocce ball is played several times a week at the Summit. Current schedule is 8 am Tuesdays and 5 pm Wednesdays. Times may be changed based on weather. There are also many other resident groups that enjoy the game at different times. Call Summit desk (951) 769-6444 and ask the attendant for current times of play. Balls are available for play any time. There is a smaller third set of balls now available, two balls each of four colors, which is great for kids and families and can be used on grass as well as the bocce court. The set is adaptive to three teams or four teams of two balls each. If you would like to come early to meet others, learn the game, practice before scheduled times, or come on a different day or time call Mike Saperstein (951) 769-7909, Larry Anderson (951) 845-8003 or Jeanine Baker (951) 797-0833. We would be happy to introduce you to this fun game. ~ Mike Saperstein Bocce Ball A beautiful Sunday morning for PT play… just a few of the group Top left circle, Jeannine Baker; top right oval, Russell Peterson and Charlie Meyer; bottom left oval; Lylia Puckett; bottom right circle, Cheri Howard
