SOLERA DIAMOND VALLEY | SEPTEMBER 2016 9 Catch a Wave: Beach Boys Tribute By Dick Roppé, Resident In the days of yore I attended more than one Beach Boys' concert. The one after a Sunday's Padres game in 1983, at then Jack Murphy Stadium, stands out as the most memorable. There were over 50,000 in attendance, many coming late just for the concert. As one looked around it became obvious that shirts were optional and beer wasn't. Positioned outside the stadium were structural engineers. You see, more than a few fans were dancing in the aisles and the engineers were anticipating and checking for stadium stability issues. The original Beach Boys were influenced by close harmony groups such as the Four Freshman and the Hi-Lo's. The musical genius of Brain Wilson set their unique style in motion back in 1961. To this day a portion of the original group still tours playing from a list of their extensive hits such as Surfin' U.S.A., Good Vibrations and California Girls. Why, you ask, are there tribute bands and groups? Because a particular band or group has, over the years, gained legendary status. That brings us this month's show — Catch A Wave. The group came together in 2000 and has toured the world. They are dedicated to replicating and perfecting the style and harmony of the original group- even down to their blue and white striped shirts and white guitars. Before arriving here for Saturday's show on our "island" they will have played in Tucson, Arizona Thursday and Prescott Friday. Checking their website it looks like they'll take a breather in December and January. If you want to know a little more, Google "Catch A Wave Beach Boys Tribute." And, if you want to check out the original Beach Boys 50th Anniversary Tour, Google "Beach Boys Live Japan 2012." That's it for now, Dude… Time for me to kick out!
