26 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | OCTOBER 2016 | Yiddish Culture Club "What I Learned When I Volunteered in a German Refugee Shelter" will be presented by Rabbi Suzanne Singer at the next Yiddish Culture Club meeting on Wed., Oct. 19, at 7 pm in the South Clubhouse Rabbi Singer has recently returned to her Congregation in Southern California after spending several weeks as a volunteer in a German shelter for those who have escaped war and persecution in such places as Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria. She will tell us about her introduction to the shelter through IsraAID, an Israeli-based non-profit that provides disaster relief around the world. Germany has been the most generous country in Europe, taking in a million refugees and making the commitment to support and care for them until they are able to make it on their own. The shelter she was assigned to in Berlin held 1,100 refugees of all ages, religions, and languages and was only one of many. She will speak of her experiences with the children as well as the adults and the work involved in doing daily laundry and preparing meals for 1,100 people. Everyone is welcome to come to hear this most timely and interesting first hand experience which deals with events that have been in the news for many months and continue now in daily reports. There is no charge for this event. Cake and coffee will be served. Info., Diane, 769-0130. Calling all men! Does the "Heart of your Heart" inspire you to sing? Do you long to call your sweetheart in song? If so, then you should check out the Sun Lakes Men's Barbershop Chorus. No prior singing experience necessary, just a willingness to listen, learn, and join in. We are a group of amateurs like yourself who enjoy singing and having fun. We meet every Wednesday morning at 9 am in the Main Clubhouse Multipurpose Room. For details contact Harry Kaylor at 845-8054. Come join us! Barbershop Chorus Our RV Club traveled to Moab, Utah in September with 14 Rigs. Trail Bosses Blanca and Bill McDade headed the group of campers and headed East from Sun Lakes. The members were able to visit places like The Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, and The Arches Monument. Members were also able to enjoy some good fishing. All in all it was a great trip. For those of you with motorhomes, travel trailers, or fifth wheels that enjoy group RV travel, company of good friends, and like to have fun in beautiful settings, you are welcome to join our club. Activities include bocce ball, golf, beanbag baseball and more. We have some planned meals so we can be together with our members and some free time so we can explore the areas we visit. If you are interested in joining our club, attending a rally or just having fun with some great people, please contact John and Peggy Andrews at 845-8295 or email peggasus28@ dc.rr.com or John and Phyllis Janicki at 755-7441.
