20 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JANUARY 2017 Emergency preparedness committee The following article was published recently in the Valley Messenger, a local newspaper serving Baby Boomers and Seniors in San Bernardino and Riverside counties. This article applies to our community: "The recent earthquake swarm in the Bombay Beach area of the Salton Sea, south of where the San Andreas Fault ends, is a stark reminder that Riverside County residents and businesses must prepare for earthquakes. "Earthquakes can happen at any time," said Kim Saruwatari, director of the Riverside County Emergency Management Department (EMD). "It is important to remember that Southern California is earthquake country and Riverside County has active fault lines running through it. The time to prepare for earthquakes is now". The California Office of Emergency Services has issued an earthquake advisory following this earthquake swarm. While the likelihood of another earthquake near the Salton Sea is fairly low, it is critical for all Riverside County residents and businesses to plan for what to do before, during and after and earthquake, including: • Create an emergency kit with water, food and other essential items that will sustain your family for three to seven days. • Drop, cover and hold on during the shaking. • If driving, pull to the side of the road and stop until shaking stops. • If you smell gas, evacuate the area. • Do not handle or drive over power lines. In the event of and earthquake, EMD will provide emergency information and instructions via the media, social media and mass notification channels. Visit RivCoReady.org and @RivCoReady on Twitter for valuable preparedness information, including information on how to build an emergency kit. Community members are also urged to register cell phone numbers and e-mail addresses with the County's Early Warning Notification System at RivCoReady.org/EWNS." ~ Brooke Federico, The Valley Messenger The Four Seasons at Beaumont community has an Emergency Preparedness Program that will assist our community if an emergency disaster occurs, but residents must prepare themselves before a disaster hits. This program is only effective if the community prepares itself with a two to three weeks of food, water and supplies. You can obtain the Residents' Emergency Handbook at the Lodge front desk for information on how to prepare or contact me at epp- 4sb@hotmail.com. Next EPC meeting is Tuesday, Jan. 17 at 10 am. ~ Alfred Blair
