20 SOLERA DIAMOND VALLEY | FEBRUARY 2017 By Judy Moore, Resident It has been an eventful year for the Pickleball Club. We were delighted to begin 2016 with new benches and covers to enhance our viewing area. They were appreciated by everyone enjoying the tournaments that were held in March and November. The March winners were: Melinda Terrian (Women's) and Steve Day (Men's). The November winners were Gary Longmire (Men's) and Chris Olivas (Women's). Our SDV tournaments are open to all SDV players from beginners to advanced. Many of our club members traveled and played in tournaments in Palm Desert, La Quinta, Encinitas, Escondido, and Oceanside, and Tustin. We had over 12 people travel to the different tournaments. Many of our members participated in the Oldlympics. The pickleball games were held at the Golden Village. We have about 50 members, and the beginners and intermediate classes that were held helped to increase our membership. We were very fortunate to have had excellent instructors with Tony Boothby, Gary Longmire, Bob Porter, Julie Grant, Melinda Terrian, John Rossi, and John Bissell. They showed great patience and made the lessons fun for all. We are all saddened that Tony and Lyn Boothby left us for Colorado. Tony was responsible for developing the pickleball lessons and he was also our Member-at-Large on the Pickleball Club Board. With Tony's departure, Gary Longmire has replaced him as an instructor and also on the Member-at-Large position. We also feel the loss of our Secretary, Lorraine Brealey. Lorraine was elected to the SDV Board of Directors and had to relinquish her Secretary position with us. She has been replaced by Kay Grasso and Judy Moore, who are serving as co-secretaries. We thank both Tony and Lorraine for their dedication and the excellent jobs they did in their positions. We now have club shirts with a logo created by Melinda Terrian. They are made of a wonderful fabric especially designed for athletic wear and we are excited about wearing them. Our final meeting for the year was our Christmas dinner party. Julie Grant coordinated the party, which included a full dinner, including ham, turkey, all the trimmings and desserts. Geraldine Shostak and Gerald Moore won club shirts, and Sandra Day won the prize for a Right/Left Game. John Bissell gave an excellent video presentation of the tournaments. It was a fun evening with lots of good food, laughter, and conversation. Our board for 2017: Rick Terrian, President; Bob Porter, Vice President; Gary Longmire, Treasurer; Kay Grasso and Judy Moore, co-Secretaries; and Mike Grant, Member-at-Large.
