In middle age he took up running and went on to compete in many marathons and other races, often winning or medaling in his age division. Whether it was a volleyball league, a 10K race, a bowling league, a golf game, table tennis, bridge, or poker, Allan was always game for competition, and a great encourager to anyone who participated. Truly one of a kind, Allan could find the humor in any situation, and always brought laughter, friendship, and a great sense of playfulness to those that knew him, and even quite often to perfect strangers. Even those he encountered only briefly during his last days were deeply affected by his wit and spirit.
