mystery theater (& more) We met the first Tuesday in August to resume their normal monthly business meetings, after a brief summer hiatus and to formalize plans for the format for next March's production of "That's Entertainment." As speculated, we will be again revert to the roots of this show, a variety format featuring only the "best of the best" of the Sun Lakes entertainers. However, we let it be known that all productions numbers has to be derived from "show-stopping" songs from movies or Broadway stage shows and that all material presented had to be songs or dance numbers that had never before been presented to Sun Lakes. Also, to ensure that we have the very best line-up of possible Sun Lakes talent for this show, we will have open auditions for spots on this show immediately following our Sept. 4, regular monthly business meeting. See below for time and location. This audition is opening to anyone; you need not be a Mystery Theater member to showcase your talents at this audition. With this show's new outline and fresh perspective it promises to rival the level of the presentations we have been proud to present for the past two years. Stay tuned for more updates, as we get closer to March! If you are one of those that have just recently discovered the joys of the activities that Sun Lakes has to offer its residents, have seen our last two productions, and said to yourself, "I would sure like to be a part of that!" wait no longer. We would also love for you to "be a part of that." Come give us a visit at our next monthly business meeting and see what "friendly" means. The next meeting will be held in the Main Clubhouse Ballroom on Tues., Sept. 4, at 1 pm. Info., Ginger, 845-9685. barbershop chorus chorale It's time again for the Chorale of Sun Lakes' powers-that-be to gear up members for the first practice of the Fall season. First and foremost our Director, Bob Jensen designs a well balanced program. Then Librarian, Toni Read searches our large music library for all the selected printed music which her crew compiles into packets - one for each member of the Chorale. Vice President, Mary Dattilo organizes another crew to man five sign-up tables to distribute packets at the sign up. It takes a dedicated team effort, under the leadership of President, Charlie Friese, to effect the always smooth operation of Sign-Up Day. Sign-ups for the Holiday Concert (as yet untitled) will be Mon., Sept. 10, in the Main Clubhouse Activities Room at 8:30 am for music packets. Bring a $15 check to SL Chorale. First practice begins in the Ballroom promptly at 9:30 am. Our Traditional Picnic Buffet will be held on that evening at 5:30 pm in the Ballroom for all members and guests for $15 pp. Reservations required. A detailed flyer will be distributed in August. Info., Billie Elowe, 845-0339. social clubs & groups | september 2012 | 17 drama club Summer is waning, but not the heat! We ended August with our usual BBQ dinner gathering. Rehearsals are well under way for the fall production, "Night of January 16th," by Ayn Rand. Production dates are the Oct. 25, 26, 27, and 28 of with Sunday the 28th being a matinee performance at 2 pm. As something different this time around the Friday evening performance will be a dinner theatre commencing with the meal at 6 pm. Cocktails and wine will be available from the bar. Attendance at dinner theatre will be limited to the seats available at the tables so if this appeals to you get your tickets early. "Night of January 16th" is a courtroom drama which includes audience members on the stage as the jury for the trial. The ending of the play depends on the jury's decision of Guilty or Not Guilty. The proceeds from this production will be dedicated to the Recovery Fund for Ronan Nelson, a 501c3 charity. Ronan is the 16 year-old grandson of Ron and Kay Nelson and was paralyzed in a rugby accident the day before Easter. He is making progress in both physical and hand therapy in Encinitas and Carlsbad but will probably never walk again. His spirit is indomitable. He is looking forward to starting his junior year in High School in late August and the challenges that will bring. If you are new to Sun Lakes and want to find your niche, the Drama Club may be just the place for you. We perform two stage plays a year and in between we put on Reader's Theatre which is a limited run, no memorization production with wine and cheese offered with the ticket. The next Reader's Theatre will be a dramatization of the old radio theatre programs, "The Bickerson's," starring Don Ameche and Frances Langford. These wildly humorous vignettes will have alternating casts chosen from the membership. Ken Brown does the technical direction and the directors are chosen from the club. These presentations take place at the South Clubhouse and therefore are intimate theatre experiences. Info., Rose Hermanson, 769-9810. Have you performed in: Glee Club? Chorus? Church? The shower? If you can carry a tune, come sing with us… we want YOU. Sing with us in chorus, small groups, or quartets in Barbershop Harmony. Previous singing experience is desirable but not necessary. Come and listen. Sing along if you feel like it – AND HAVE FUN doing it. Info., Harry Kaylor, 845-8054. Meet us Wednesdays at 9 am in the Main Clubhouse Multipurpose Room.
