| Four Seasons Hemet Herald | May 2017 | 37 Did You Know? By Micki Rosen, resident of Four Seasons Beaumont DID YOU KNOW THAT MAY 5 IS CARTOONISTS DAY? In 1895 a man named Richard F. Outcault introduced a small bald kid in a nightshirt, the "Yellow Kid," to the world in an incredibly popular publication in New York City at the time, the New York World. Little did Mr. Outcault know that when he first created this character, it would lead to a revolution in how stories were told and presented in sequential art pieces, and would, in fact, create a new standard piece of content for newspapers everywhere. Cartoonists Day was created to celebrate this man and his accomplishments. Everything from our Sunday comics to animation can be linked back to him and his creation – just a bald kid in a nightshirt. DID YOU KNOW THAT MAY 30 IS MINT JULEP DAY? Mint julep originated in the southern US and still counts this area as its heartland. This is especially true of Kentucky, where the annual Kentucky Derby horse race sees around 120,000 juleps served each year. Premium versions of the drink are served in gold-plated cups with silver straws at a cost of $1,000, but you don't need to spend quite that much to enjoy this tasty beverage! The ingredients are simple – bourbon, mint leaf, sugar and water – but no two bartenders seem to make the drink the same way. DID YOU KNOW THAT MAY 29 IS PAPER CLIP DAY? The first patent for a bent wire paper clip was awarded to Samuel B. Fay in 1867 in the US. Originally, the paper clip was designed for attaching tickets to fabric, although the patent recognized that it could be used to attach papers together. However, that model did not much resemble the one we know today. The paper clip as we know it was most likely designed by Norwegian inventor Johan Vaaler. Years later, during World War II, the paper clip was used as a symbol of the Norwegian resistance to the Nazi occupation; they were worn by Norwegians on coat lapels. The Nazis saw this as a threat and banned paper clips altogether. Later, a giant paper clip was erected in Sandvika, Norway to remind people about the role this tiny object played in the nation's history. DID YOU KNOW THAT MAY 17 IS WORLD BAKING DAY? World Baking Day was created by the folks at worldbakingday.com, who decided it was high time to spread the joy of baking all around the world, especially to those who don't bake too often and are not particularly experienced at it. This day is meant to show people just how much fun it can be to make a cake or some cookies. Baking can be a great way to spend time with family and friends, not to mention how much fun it is to eat what you've made once it's done! (Or before it's done, if you like cookie dough…) DID YOU KNOW THAT MAY 15 IS STRAW HAT DAY? Straw hats have been found in almost every culture throughout the world, with different styles and techniques used to make them suitable for a particular area. Straw hats are known to go back to before the Middle Ages all throughout the West and into the Orient. Since then, some of the different styles are so important that they have become indelibly tied to a culture or place and, in some cases, a person. When most Americans think of the Panama hat, they immediately think of Teddy Roosevelt, the iconic president responsible both for the building of the Panama Canal and the inspiration for the Teddy bear.
