26 SOLERA DIAMOND VALLEY | MAY 2017

From all the smiling faces
you can tell everyone had a
good time at the St. Paddy's
Day potluck.
Consider this a postscript.
Nick knack paddywhack,
paddy wagon, Paddy Chayefsky.
The Irish nickname for Padraig
is Paddy.
Spoiler alert! St. Patrick
wasn't even Irish; he was born
in Britain around 390 A.D. Nor
did he drive the snakes out of
Ireland. Ireland has never had
snakes. Before corned beef and
cabbage, pork and potatoes
were the traditional Irish
fare. Prior to immigrating to
America beef was expensive
and not readily available. Once
in America, beef and cabbage
were less expensive than pork
and potatoes, so the beef and
the cabbage were cooked in the
same pot.
End spoiler alert. Once
again, the Chicago River was
dyed green with 45 pounds of
vegetable dye. The effect lasts
five hours.
