20 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JUNE 2017 Emergency preparedness committee 'ARE YOU READY' PRESENTATION DRAWS CROWD On April 28, the Emergency Preparedness Committee (EPC) hosted a special presentation entitled, "Are You Ready," in the Lodge Ballroom highlighting the need for earthquake preparedness. Al Blair, chairperson of EPC, brought together several specialists on earthquake preparedness. Opening remarks were made by Len Tavernetti, President of the Board of Directors, followed by Glenn Pomeroy, CEO of the California Earthquake Authority (CEA), who spoke about earthquake insurance available from his not-for-profit state agency. He emphasized that standard homeowners' insurance policies do not cover damage to homes caused by earthquakes. The CEA currently has over $14 billion in assets, enough to pay for residential earthquake damage equivalent to two Northridge quakes. The CEA has, in recent years, lowered their rates and encouraged residents to check out their website: www.EarthquakeAuthority.com. Mario Janesin of the Community Access Center in Riverside spoke on emergency preparedness suggestions for all and special tips for persons with disabilities. He mentioned that if you are in a building, and aware that there is an active shooter, what actions you can take to reduce your risk. He spoke about the many Community Access Centers in Riverside County and how these centers empower disabled persons to control their own lives by implementing services and information to support them. Janesin encouraged residents to check out his agency's website at www.ilac.org. EPC chair, Al Blair, in his presentation, highlighted what many residents can do to enhance their protection in their home against earthquakes. He also gave an overview of the many upcoming classes available to residents that are offered by the EPC and outside agencies. These include a First Aid Workshop, CPR and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) training sessions, Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) and others. Numerous brochures and hand-outs on these and other topics were available to attendees. After the presentations, the guest speakers entertained numerous questions from the audience related to earthquake preparedness. Dennis Day, Riverside County Emergency Management Department Coordinator, assisted in this portion of the program. At the conclusion of the program, two first aid kits were given out in a no-fee raffle. Look for other presentations by the EPC presented periodically throughout the year. ~ Fred Weck At our monthly meeting on May 5, we had six resident guests in attendance. We continue to focus on safety within our community. Just a few reminders: The speed limit on Four Seasons Circle is 30 mph. Many residents are exceeding the speed limit on a regular basis. For your safety, as well as the safety of others please respect the posted speed limit. We continue to work on pedestrian safety as well. When walking please use the sidewalks. We are working on safe locations for possible crosswalks on Four Seasons Circle. Security at our gates is important to keep our community a safe place to live. We are working on upgrading the camera systems at our Main Gate as well as Crooked Creek Gate. Breckenridge Gate has not yet had cameras installed and it is important that cameras are installed there as well. When entering our community late at night, please be observant and do not let in cars who are waiting at the gate. If they belong here they should either have a transponder or a gate code. If they don't have either, they probably don't belong here. Letting in people you don't know puts our community at risk. Summer is almost here — it will be HOT soon. For your own safety, and safety of your pets and family please take a few extra precautions. Check your yard before letting pets or young children out to play. If you happen to find a critter that is not desirable, please contact Animal Control at (951) 654-8002 for safe removal. Also, when out walking make sure that you have water for yourself and your pet. If you have any safety questions or concerns please attend one of our Safety Committee meeting or place your concern in the suggestion box. We meet on the first Tuesday of the month at 10 am in the RCN Conference Room. ~ Donna Lewis Safety Committee Al Blair, Glenn Pomeroy, Len Tavernetti, Dennis Day, and Mario Janesin
