| Four Seasons Hemet Herald | June 2017 | 37 By Micki Rosen, resident of Four Seasons Beaumont DID YOU KNOW THAT JUNE 17 IS WORLD JUGGLING DAY? World Juggling Day was established by the International Jugglers Association, and is dedicated to preserving and spreading the history of the art of juggling. Juggling as an art form is far older than most people credit, going back well over 4,000 years. The first evidence of juggling as an art form goes back to the wall of a tomb in Egypt. A group of women are seen dancing and performing with up to three balls. Other forms of juggling can be found in China, where the ancient Chu warrior Xiong Yiliao was reported to practice "nongwan", the art of "throwing multiple objects up and down without dropping." Apparently his skills were so profound that he stepped out between the armies of Chu and Song and promptly juggled nine balls, so astounding the Song troops that they turned and fled in terror. Such is the magic of juggling. Did You Know? DID YOU KNOW THAT JUNE 20 IS ICE CREAM SODA DAY? Ice cream sodas were created by the legendary Robert Green in 1874 during Philadelphia's sesquicentennial jamboree. Sources state that the ingenious Mr. Green mixed vanilla ice cream in with the soda he was selling, after unfortunately being devoid of ice. It was a brilliant idea to keep the sodas cold. It was an instantaneous hit and spread like proverbial wildfire. Mr. Green basked in his achievement for the remainder of his existence and had "Originator of the Ice Cream Soda" written on his gravestone. DID YOU KNOW THAT JUNE 16 IS FLIP-FLOP DAY? People have been wearing flip-flops for thousands of years, with the earliest wearers being the ancient Egyptians in 4000 BC. Since then, the sandals have been worn throughout the world. They got their name because of the slapping sound they make against the ground when you walk in them. Flip-Flop Day was founded by Tropical Smoothie Café. Customers who visit a participating Café on Flip-Flop Day receive a free smoothie. Put on your flip-flops and enjoy a relaxing day. DID YOU KNOW THAT JUNE 6 IS YO-YO DAY? Yo-yos have been around for 2,000 years and were known under different names such as quizzes or bandalores. The origin of the yo- yo appears to stem from the Philippines and the earliest entry of the word appears in a Filipino dictionary in the early 1860s. In the 1920s, Pedro Flores (a man with Filipino roots) began constructing yo-yos in America. He was stunned with how American youngsters and adolescents took to the toy and started mass producing the product. Yo-yos are firmly embedded into toy culture across the globe. DID YOU KNOW THAT JUNE 2 IS DONUT DAY? The history of the donut isn't clearly known, but what is known is that their iconic look started making an appearance in the United States in the mid-1800s. Rumor has it a gentleman by the name of Hanson Gregory invented them, out of a distaste for the undercooked centers and greasiness of the existing shapes and options. The shape was said to be obtained by punching a hole in the center with a tin pepper box. Donut Day came to pass in part due to the efforts of a doctor in the military in WWI who sought to brighten the day of the wounded soldiers he worked on. On his first day at the military base, he purchased eight dozen donuts and gave one to each wounded soldier. A lieutenant general heard about it and decided to start a fundraiser to help provide the donuts. The Salvation Army got involved and next thing you know, female Salvation Army workers were called "Doughnut Dollies" and served donuts and coffee to soldiers around the world.
