| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JUNE 2017 | 3 By Sandra Moyer FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK It is hard to believe that we are half way through the year and it is time to work on the 2018 budget. The Board has several issues to address: 1. Mandated increases to minimum wage โ€“ 50ยข this year, then $1 in January 2018, and each year thereafter through 2022. 2. The Governor's gasoline tax will not only impact our golf course equipment use and maintenance crews, but along with the wage increase, will have a domino effect with all of our vendors. 3. Our water rates are definitely going to increase significantly. We will not have that percentage until the city finishes their "water rate study," hopefully by the end of this month. These government mandates have the potential to dramatically affect future assessments. We will inform you of the open budget sessions and I hope you will attend. The Board needs, wants, and encourages your input. On a lighter note, I hope you are thinking about your golf cart designs for our July Fourth Parade. This is my second year on the Board but my first as President. I would like to share with you what sums up my feelings and attitude of what makes a good Board Member. a) The best association directors are the ones who understand team governance โ€“ that individually they have no power and that the power resides in the board as a group. b) An attitude of service is the foundation of a healthy board โ€“ directors serve their community. Members are neighbors and so are the directors. c) The best run associations understand that governance requires balancing financial, maintenance, legal/process, and community concerns. The first three cannot overshadow the last - "the neighborhood." Sun Lakes is a beautiful and wonderful neighborhood.
