| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JULY 2017 | 29 This month, the Friendship Club presents a rousing, well-known folk singing group called The Limeliters. The group was originally formed in July 1959 by Louis Gottlieb, Alex Hassilev, and Glenn Yarbrough. Their success was immediate, and they received offers from three recording companies. Soon after, they signed with RCA and produced a string of best-selling albums, making The Limeliters a household name. More than all their albums, what The Limeliters are truly famous for is their trademark Limeliters sound. They are loved for a large collection of audience-pleasers, like "There's a Meetin' Here Tonight," "City of New Orleans," "A Dollar Down," "Have Some Madeira M'Dear," "Lonesome Traveler," "Wabash Cannonball," "Whiskey in the Jar," and many others. In 1965, at the pinnacle of their success, the members of the group decided to take a break. For the next few years they each pursued their own individual interests. During the seventies, The Limeliters began a series of yearly reunion tours with Yarbrough, who had achieved great success on his own. These were so successful that in 1981, Hassilev and Gottlieb decided to reform the group. By 2004, they once again began thrilling audiences with the unique sound that made them famous. Members of the group changed over time, but their signature sound remained the same. In early 2004, tenor Mack Bailey and comedian baritone Andy Corwin joined the group. Hassilev retired in 2006, and Gaylan Taylor joined. In 2012, Bailey left and Don Marovich took his place, and the present day Limeliters was formed. Corwin plays the bass and sings baritone and bass, Taylor plays the guitar and sings baritone, and Marovich plays the guitar, banjo, mandolin, and sings tenor. Tickets for this show are $20 for members, and $25 for non- resident guests. Doors open at 6 pm, and the show begins at 7 pm. Make checks out to Friendship Club, and drop them off at 5168 Rio Bravo Drive. As usual, the SLCC restaurant will be open with a special buffet from 4 to 7 pm the evening of the show. For cancellations and information, call Pat at 845-3789 or Judy at 797-0265. Mark your calendars now for The Friendship Club's next program on Aug. 13, starring a Sun Lakes favorite, Jack Walker.
