FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | AUGUST 2017 61 The First Annual July Fourth Tournament played as a double elimination. Games played were to 75 and were not quick. There were discs flying. Good fun was had by all. Beautiful flowers, trees and shrubs were the setting for shuffleboard play! Great game, fun, exercise with friends, all a few steps south of RCN Building. Everyone is welcome and many are learning: Who goes first? Which color disks go? How to strategize to block, kill other team's points, and score for your own team. Players use a cue (cue-stick), to push their colored disks down the court. The scoring diagram is divided by lines, into six scoring zones, with the following values: 10, 8, 8, 7, 7, 10-off. You hope not to land on 10-off. Play times are 9 am Fridays, 9 am Saturdays, 9 am Sundays, 9 am Mondays. All are welcome. Come join in the fun and learn. A few weeks ago a 100-point game took just nine minutes. In June a game took 40 minutes. Players have learned defense. One player one day earned nickname "The Terminator." Each time we play we have a draw for "random mix." For the Take-a-Hikers, the Ernie Maxwell trail is our old pair of sneakers. This year, with unusual June temperatures in triple digits, the familiar hike above Idyllwild was especially nice. And, after the plentiful rainfall this spring, the headwaters of many streams were bubbling. At an elevation of 6,300 feet the temperature was a welcoming 70 degrees mostly under shading trees. The rock- strewn dirt path climbs 675 feet from where we park to the Humber Park trailhead with a great view of both the Palm Springs landscape and Tahquitz Peak. After a snack break we retrace our foot prints 2.5 miles to our vehicles, dust off and then head to the restaurant for lunch. It is great exercise, good food and wonderful companionship.
