FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | OCTOBER 2017 59 Bocce Ball Bocce ball is played on new courts at The Summit. Play is 9 am Tuesdays, 5 pm Wednesdays, and 5 pm Fridays. Many players and new residents come to play. Everyone is welcome. Play is now on beautiful tournament-grade, smooth, accurate courts and sideboards. Easy small step-in makes it easy to enter. Smooth concrete surrounds the courts. All players are learning accurate and careful throws. The word "bocce" comes from the Italian word meaning "to bowl." The small white ball thrown first to start the game is called the pallino. Rules are very simple. Get your ball as close to the pallino as possible to score a point. If more balls of the same color are closest, these additionally score points. Much like billiards, bocce requires players to take turns. This makes it an ideal game for socializing in between turns. Often cheers, or laughter can be heard. No one has an edge in bocce ball unless of course they have played for years. We generally play a game to 12 points. Two games are generally played and take approximately one to one and a half hours. We mix and match so no team is expert and change numbers on a team so no one is left out. Bocce ball is played several times a week at The Summit. Times change based on weather. Many groups play at various times. Call The Summit desk at (951) 769-6444 and ask attendant for current times of play. The game of bocce requires no specific skills or previous experience. You will get a little exercise and enjoy a beautiful view and breezes at The Summit, all while having a great time with a great group of people. If you are interested in learning the game, please join us at The Summit. Call for times. If you are interested in playing we will be happy to meet with you about 15 minutes before the game to go over the rules and let you have a little pre-game practice. If you would like to schedule your first practice session, or if you have any questions, please call any of the contacts: Mike Saperstein, (951) 769-7909; Larry Anderson, (951) 846-3123; Jeannine Baker, (951) 797-0833. ~ Mike Saperstein September found cool morning starts at 9 am Fridays through Mondays. Shade was good on our courts. We often use a dust mop and spray to add ease and speed to disks. Supplies are in the cabinet near the old tennis courts. Ask for the key at front desk. One game had four ends play and zero points. Defense skills are sometimes very good. Beautiful flowers, trees and shrubs are the setting for shuffleboard play! Great game, fun, exercise with friends, all a few steps south of RCN Building at the Lodge. Everyone is welcome and everyone is learning. Who goes first? Which color disks go? How to strategize to block, kill other team's points, and score for your own team. Players use a cue (cue-stick), to push their colored disks down the court. The scoring diagram is divided by lines, into six scoring zones, with the following values: 10, 8, 8, 7, 7, 10-off. You hope not to land on 10-off. Come join in the fun and learn. A few weeks ago 100-point game took just nine minutes. Players have learned defense. One player earned the nickname "The Terminator." Each time we play we draw for "random mix" teams.
