FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | DECEMBER 2017 37 Creative Drawing & Sketching Class Teacher Rob Kelman This is the perspective of our Artist of the Month, Connie Johnson. The definition of flamingo, in World Book dictionary states "a large, web-footed tropical wading bird with very long and slender legs and neck, a heavy bent bill, and feathers that vary from pink to red." There's no doubt about it, color makes the beginning of a pleasant picture, featuring these gawky birds, specifically when an azure blue water feature is added. To me, it's all about color that makes art sing. Retirement gave me a chance to explore the world of art, which was far removed from what I did for a living. During vacations, both my husband and I liked to explore museums, but that was about it for me. My husband had a great affinity for photography, however, I was floundering around in regard to what to do with my spare retirement time. Fortunately, he discovered Rob Kelman's art classes. I signed up! It was a good experience learning to sketch in black and white, using pencils, but after a while, I yearned for some colors, specifically watercolors. Fortunately, I had some friends that were also interested in painting in watercolor, so we found another class in which to participate. A couple of years later, I started noticing that artwork of other "Artists of the Month" in the Breeze, were "in color," so I returned to Rob's class. During my first class back, I saw others in class using pastels, acrylics, colored pencil, and happily, watercolors! I am so happy and now feel very much at home with color all around me. The talent of the other students is very stimulating, and they make me want to try harder as an artist. Come around and see if Rob's classes are what you're missing in your life. You might want to join and be part of a "colorful" group of terrific people. Classes are FREE. We meet on Mondays 10 am to noon and/or Wednesdays 6 to 8 pm.
