8 SOLERA DIAMOND VALLEY | DECEMBER 2017
By Berkie Harris, Resident
The Ronettes, the Shirelles, the Dixie
Cups, the Crystals, Martha and the
Vandellas. I loved the girl groups of the
50s and 60s so much that I wanted to quit
high school and be in one of these groups. I
used to practice in front of the mirror in my
attic bedroom, while playing a 45 from my
arsenal of records, as far from the eyes and
ears of my super vigilant and ever present
mother as I could get. Crooning "da doo ron
ron ron, da doo ron ron" I was in teen girl
heaven fantasizing about the outfits for my
group's next album cover. There was one
problem, however. I couldn't sing. Not a
note and still can't.
But here's someone who can: Jonnie
Fox and the Satinettes and they are
bringing their tribute show to our Lodge
on Saturday, January 20. The Satinettes
are a trio of female vocalists paying tribute
to the iconic girl groups of the 40s, 50s
and 60s. Together, they provide a vintage
costumed show of beautiful harmonies
and memorable tunes. Songs like Chapel of
Love, Be My Baby, Bobby's Girl, Locomotion,
One Fine Day and My Guy. Their repertoire
is extensive.
The Satinettes are a local group with
headquarters in Temecula. They play
surrounding venues and events such as
casinos, wineries, car cruises, and private
parties. Often they sing at Pala Casino's
Tuesday 60 Plus Club. This is where I first
saw them and as anyone who has been to
Pala knows; the tribute acts there are first
class.
Jonnie is the founder and lead vocalist.
She is originally from New Orleans and
began singing with bands in the French
Quarter in the early 70s at the age of 17. The
other group members also have experience
singing and performing professionally.
Join us on the evening of January 20 in
the Lodge Ballroom for what I guarantee
will be one of the best shows of the year.
