| Four Seasons Hemet Herald | JANUARY 2018 | 27 Tennis Friends This past year was very exciting! Among our Tennis Friends group, we had one marriage in May and two engagements announced in November! We had a Golden Set which means the winners scored 16 points in a row (the losers scored no points.) This has never happened before. In fact, none present had ever heard of a Golden Set before. (Earle Irvine has some experience in these things.) Congratulations to George D. and John T., you are golden! We participated in the OLDLYMPICS, had a group BBQ, participated in the Fall Marketplace and of course we played lots and lots and lots of tennis! We all remain friends on and off the courts, and look forward to 2018. This past November our Tennis Friends enjoyed an annual barbecue and presentation of the Spirit Award. This award has been given each year since 2012. The first recipient was Bill Koretke, who passed away that year after battling cancer. Even though he was fighting this disease he came out to the courts and played with grace and enthusiasm as often as he could. His love of the game and demeanor on and off the court inspired his tennis friends to want to honor him. When his wife Bernadette donated one of his many trophies to the tennis group, the idea of a Spirit Award was born. The trophy, a lovely crystal tennis racquet mounted in a wooden plaque, resides with the recipient for one year, then moves on. Each recipient's name is added to the plaque: 2013 Chuck Sims, 2014 Trish Moorhouse, 2015 Judy Bailey, 2016 George Doktorczyk. Our 2017 recipient Bill Spreen, is exceptional for his love of the game, determination to play through physical challenges, and the grace to always compliment both his partners and opponents. He is as positive and supportive off the courts as well. He was a shoe in! Tennis Friends want to thank the Facilities Committee and our General Manager Rick Ruth and his staff, for following through on the much needed court re-surfacing and repairs. Courts now look beautiful and we truly appreciate that they were repaired! Also, thank you to tennis players who were pro-active for this excellent outcome: Paul Barr, Earle Irvine, Chuck Sims, Tracy Trousset and Jim Crase. We are a friendly group and hope to have more "friends" join us on the courts in 2018. Just look up times in the Hemet Herald weekly tennis schedule. We are on the courts most every day.
