Harrison Elwood Blake was born on April 14, 1923 to Chester and Annie Blake in Lowell, Massachusetts. In 1943 Harrison joined the U.S. Navy and in 1946 as a Metal Smith 3rd Class, received an honorable discharge. On a weekend trip to Sutton, Quebec Harrison met the love of his life, Elizabeth (Betty) Jenne and on May 29, 1948 they were married. He graduated from the Waltham School of Watch Making. In December of 1948, the Blakes moved to Southern California. After working in a few different shops, Harrison decided to go into business for himself. In 1961, with Betty by his side, Blake Jewelers was opened in Granada Hills, California. For 30 years Harrison and Betty worked and lived in Granada Hills and after closing the store in 1991 spent a few years deciding on the perfect place for retirement. In 1998 Harrison and Betty moved to Sun Lakes and became involved in the community. Harrison enjoyed singing in the Sun Lakes Chorus and with the Barbershop Quartet. He enjoyed golfing and divot doctoring on the golf course. The Blakes became members of the Friendship Club and especially enjoyed the dinner dances. At 94 years young, Harrison passed away peacefully in his sleep on Nov. 18, 2017 and was laid to rest at the Riverside National Cemetery. Harrison is survived by his beautiful bride Betty, two children Scott and Patti, son-in-law Kelly and four adult grandchildren, Andrew, Matthew, Hannah and Russell. Ray Briant passed away on September 25. He was born on July 18, 1935 in Hawkins, Wisconsin. He joined the Air Force and was attached to the Intelligence Unit. Following his service, he attended San Diego State University, from which he graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration. He went on to attain a Masters Degree in Finance. His career consisted of IT positions with various companies, including IT Director for the Four Square Church Foundation. Ray had a passion for travel and used his computer expertise to obtain consulting positions in Libya, Liberia, Ethiopia, and Saudi Arabia. For fun, he and his wife Harriet traveled to dozens of locations around the world. He and Harriet discovered Sun Lakes through friends and bought a home in 2004. While in Sun Lakes he served the city of Banning as a member of the Planning Commission on two separate occasions. He was also a member of the Pass Democratic Club. In Sun Lakes he served on the Safety Advisory and Finance Advisory Committees. He also participated in the Men's Discussion Group. He is survived and sorely missed by his wife Harriet, daughters Christine, Monica, and Glynis, granddaughters Trishia and Kelly, grandson Christopher, and sister Lillian. Selina May Smith, 97, passed away peacefully Monday, January 8, 2018 at San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital in Banning, California. She was born on May 13, 1920 in San Bernardino, California to Frederick Angelo Margie, a native of Italy, and Elizabeth Martin Margie, a descendant of the San Bernardino Pike and Sawyer pioneer families. Selina graduated from the University of Redlands in 1942 with a Bachelor's degree in Education and a Teaching Credential in Elementary Education. She married her husband Floyd William Smith that same year. Selina went on to teach 1st Grade for the San Bernardino School District for 37 years, retiring in 1979. She earned the respect of her colleagues and administrators for her dedication to her pupils and for her service as a mentor teacher. For her, every event or change in season was a teachable moment. Selina resided in San Bernardino for most of her life. After the death of her husband Floyd in 1985 she looked around for another, smaller home, and in 1987 moved to Sun Lakes Country Club as a Founding Member. Her retirement years were filled with traveling the world, including India, to Russia, China and all points in between. She enjoyed playing tennis and did so well into her 80s. She loved Mexican food and milk chocolates and especially Almond Roca. A lifelong Christian, she was first an active member of the First Church of the Nazarene in San Bernardino, and later the Banning Church of the Nazarene. She taught Sunday School and was a member of the Missionary Society. Selina was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Floyd. She is survived by her son Robert William Smith and his former wife Sherril Ann Tinder, both of Riverside; her grandchildren Claire Marie Burke (Ryan) of Temecula and Gregory Christopher Smith of Riverside; and niece Susan Thomas (Grif ). 64 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | FEBRUARY 2018 | Friends we will miss We want to remember your loved ones in the "Friends We Will Miss" section, above, but we need your help.
