Connie I. Gallegos, 97, passed away April 13, 2018 in her home here in Sun Lakes. She was born in Minneapolis, MN on March 1, 1921. She graduated from Central High School. She and her husband were very efficient in the auto business they had. Connie also had a little time left over besides their business to purchase and run an apartment building. She was also very skilled at shorthand, recording 120 words per minute. Connie was very active in Sun Lakes, Tap Dancing, Hula Dancing and Bocce, to name just a few. Her husband Edward preceded her in death, as her youngest daughter Janell had, also. Connie loved her gardening and growing things. She even named the trees and shrubs she planted. She is survived by a daughter and five grandchildren. Modesto Ponce De Leon 80, passed away April 15, 2018 at his home in Banning. He was born September 21, 1937 in Wilmington, CA to Francisco and Isabel Ponce De Leon. Modesto had resided in Los Angeles and Orange County most of his life. After his retirement he moved to Sun Lakes Country Club where he resided for 15 years. Modesto enjoyed being an active member of the Elks Lodge. He owned three dry cleaners, one in Banning and two in Beaumont called Desert Palm Cleaners. He was in the San Pedro Elks Club for 51 years, the Eagles in Banning for five years and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. He was also a member of the Young at Heart Club. Modesto is survived by his wife, Norma Ponce De Leon; daughters, Diane Franco, Helen Metcalf and Melissa Ponce De Leon; son, Michael Ponce De Leon; brothers, Frank, Andy and Adolph; sisters Rosie, Yolanda and Isabel. Roger Lawrence Hobbs was born to Joseph Evan and Loueva Hobbs in Mayfield, Kentucky on December 12, 1947. He was raised in El Monte, California, along with his five sisters, Mary, Susan, Kathryn, Carol and Peggy. He attended Nativity Church and school, and Bishop Amat High School, class of 1965. Roger started work early, the summer he was 15, working on his grandfather's farm in Kentucky. (He grew up a lot that summer!) Then he began working as a box boy at the nearby Shopping Bag grocery store. In 1968 he was drafted into the army during the Vietnam War, serving for two years. After his service, he continued with a grocery career, working up to manager of the produce department, where he spent most of his career. He married the love of his life, Sandra Faye, in Reno on December 1, 1971. Along with Sandy came two precious children, Michael Edmon and Michelle Ann. He graciously took them on and loved them as his own, formally adopting them in 1975. As children do, they grew up quickly, got married, and gave him three grandsons, Eric, Gabriel and Cameron and twin granddaughters Taylor and Kaitlyn. He is also the proud great grandpa to Brendan and Lilliana. Roger was lucky enough to retire and move to Sun Lakes in 2001, when he was a young 54 years old. He loved his new life on the golf course, playing five days a week (sometimes more), and serving on the Sun Lakes Golf Committee for a number of years. Roger deeply loved and was devoted to his wife Sandy through their 47 year marriage. They drew ever closer, each supporting the other, through their many health issues. They made many wonderful new friends during the years here at Sun Lakes, and through their many activities such as bocce ball, marbles, poker, pinochle, and the Friendship Club. Roger was a good, good man. He loved and LIVED his Catholic faith. He, along with Sandy, served as Eucharistic ministers at their local parish. Roger showed by example to all who knew him his many Godly traits, such as humility, compassion, love of justice, and love of mankind. He was usually the first to accept a new member into the family, as testified by daughter-in-law Patsy. He will be dearly missed by all of us who have had the privilege of knowing him. We are sure that Roger is enjoying his face to face time with Jesus. 68 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JUNE 2018 | Friends we will miss We want to remember your loved ones in the "Friends We Will Miss" section, above, but we need your help.
