44 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JULY 2018 The Book Club selection for July is Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly. This summary is provided by Reading Group Guides. "Based on a true story of a New York socialite who championed a group of concentration camp survivors known as the Rabbits, this acclaimed 2016 debut novel reveals a story of love, redemption and terrible secrets that were hidden for decades. "Caroline Ferriday is a former Broadway actress and liaison to the French consulate whose life is forever changed when Hitler's army invades Poland in September 1939 — and then sets its sights on France. An ocean away from Caroline, Kasia Kuzmerick, a Polish teenager, sinks deeper into her role as a courier for the underground resistance movement. In Germany, Herta Oberheuser, a young doctor, answers an ad for a government medical position — only to find herself trapped in a male-dominated realm of Nazi secrets and power. "The lives of these three women are set on a collision course when the unthinkable happens and Kasia is sent to Ravensbruck, the notorious Nazi concentration camp for women. Their stories cross continents, as Caroline and Kasia strive to bring justice to those whom history has forgotten." Please join us at the Lodge when we discuss this book at 9:30 am on Tuesday, July 10. Our August selection will be The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah. ~ Alex Woodcock Book Club Good news as the Writer's Club moves into summer. First, we are going to stay active during the summer months. In the past, the club has gone on hiatus during the summer, this year the members voted to continue meeting. Next, the club is growing. Several new members with a wide range of interests have joined the group. Members are writing poetry, short stories, family histories, novels, and even a major financial analysis of 2008. Our topics for the meetings cover a wide range of areas from creativity to writer's block. One of the items we discussed in May was Ricardo Gartner's fascinating book of ancestral memories, Encounters After the Sunset. The group also discussed the idea of each of us writing a chapter on the history of what it was like when we were growing up. So much of this knowledge is being lost to new generations. You don't need to be writing a book. If you have enthusiasm for the written word join us. We welcome all forms of writing and at every level of experience and skill. As a novice writer who was welcomed into the group, I say, see you there. Next meeting is Tuesday, July 10 at 1:30 pm. ~ John Baeyertz Writer's Club
