30 | Four Seasons Hemet Herald | July 2018 | From the President – Tom Moore: Summer is finally here! No more ice-cold mornings. We no longer have to bundle up like a giant burrito just to play the game we love. This month let's focus on the actual game of golf and what we can do to lower our scores. Some golfers feel that purchasing the latest and greatest equipment can make their game better. Others will spend more time at the driving range in hopes of fixing that slice. Still others feel that reading about golf or watching it on TV can somehow improve their game. All of these techniques might work for some golfers, but the only sure-fire way that I know to get better is to spend some time with a professional golf instructor. As some of you know, Hemet Golf Club now has an LPGA-Certified teaching pro available on-site. Kati Biszantz is a Former LPGA Tour pro. She was named the Western Section "Teacher of the Year," voted a Golf Magazine top regional instructor, and in 2016 was nominated to the LPGA Hall of Fame. For the past several years she has been the resident pro at the Seven Hills golf course. Kati has graciously offered to contribute an occasional golf tip to include in our article in the Herald magazine. This month, she provides us with the following tip: THE BEST PUTTING TIP EVER I have often been asked out of all the tips I could give, what the absolute best one was. Without a doubt it has to be one involving putting. Keep putting simple and easy by lining up and then instead of the traditional advice of looking at the ball - look at the hole instead! Practice very short putts first, gradually working back to longer ones. If this seems unnatural, try tossing a ball to someone without looking at them and see how successful you are. The same holds true in putting. I start all my beginners out this way and they are awesome putters, especially inside 10 feet. Try this method and I guarantee you will be amazed with the results. Kati can be reached at (951) 304-0442. July dates to remember: July 4 - Golf Cart Parade. Decorate your golf cart and gather at the traffic circle in front of The Lodge at 9 am, followed at 9:30 by a parade through the Four Seasons community (approximately one hour). July 21 - the "Grandfathers for Golf " Scramble Tournament at the Golden Era Golf Course. Cost is $30, and includes 18 holes of golf, a continental breakfast, lunch at the half-way point, and a steak dinner at the end. Limited to 52 golfers. See y'all on the course! Our July 2018 Game Schedule is: July 3 at 7:30 am - Team Scramble – Red, White & Blue (Minimum 3-Tee Shots) July 10 at 7:30 am - Partners-Same Flight: Best Net Score Per Hole July 17 at 7:30 am - Team: One, Two, Three Net Score(s) July 24 at 7:30 am - Individual: Low Net--Throw Out 1-Hole Front and 1-Hole Back July 31 at 7:30 am - (T) – Low Net – Post as Tournament From the Membership Chair – Elliot Yaeger: Our membership of 151 golfers has remained unchanged since last month. We have tournaments every Tuesday throughout the year, including individual play as well as team play. Tee times are 7:30 am from April through September and 8 am from October through March. It is still not too late to join. Just stop by the front desk at the Lodge and pick up an application. Complete the application and return it to the Lodge with a check for $66. This will include membership to the club as well as membership to the SCGA, who will provide you with an official handicap twice a month. If you have any questions, please contact Elliot Yaeger at (951) 223-3735 or ey1611@gmail.com. From the Rules Chair – Tom Johnson: Beginning in 2019, when relief is defined by one or two club lengths the club to use is the longest club in your bag, not including your putter. You will find your nearest point of relief and then use your longest club to mark the area of relief into which you will drop your ball. You will be able to drop from knee height instead of the current shoulder height. There is a copy of the new rules available at www.usga.org. New rule books are expected to be available in September. The club plans to provide some opportunities to learn the rules later this year. From the Handicap Chair – Melody Lewis: A few months ago, I addressed a concern regarding some members that tend to have a higher handicap when coming from other clubs during the winter months. This also applies to those members that play a variety of courses. As previously mentioned, not only is our club "easy" by SCGA standards, but as a club we also play "preferred lies" on club play day, not to mention that many golfers tend to roll the ball around on those "casual" rounds. Although we can play "preferred lies," there are some pitfalls. Here are two major issues. 1.) "Preferred lies" generally tend to lower scores and each members Handicap Index. 2.) Extended/ indiscriminate use will place players at a disadvantage when and where they must play the ball as it lies. If you really want your handicap index to reflect your true playing ability, play the ball down. If you need to take a penalty drop, do it and play on.
