FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | APRIL 2019 55 Ladies Putters Group The Ladies Putters Group recently had a very fun event. They hosted a Bring a Male Buddy putting tournament. The tournament, a two-day event, was on Feb. 25 and March 1. A total of 30 residents participated in this inaugural tournament, held on the putting green at The Courts. Phyllis Kates and Roland Balingit won on Monday evening with an average score of 19. Following closely on Phyllis and Roland's heels, the following Friday morning, were Cat Thomas and Jim Samples, with an average score of 19½. Smitty's gift certificates were given to all the winners. Both groups enjoyed refreshments at The Courts after each tournament. Many of the participants could be heard asking, "When can we do this again?" Kudos to Leona Davisson for organizing this fun event. The cold weather hasn't deterred LPG members. You can find them any Monday evening at 6 pm, on the putting green. You may also join them on Friday mornings at 9 am and take in the view of the beautiful snowcapped mountains while you putt. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Ladies Putters Group, or just want additional information, you can find sign-up sheets at The Lodge, The Summit and The Courts. You many also contact Judy Irving at (951) 922-2525. ~ Vivian Walker Bocce ball is played at The Summit, 9 am Tuesdays, 3 pm on both Wednesdays and Fridays. Everyone is welcome. Play is on beautiful, tournament-grade, smooth, accurate courts and sideboards. Easy small step-in and ramps for wheel chairs or scooters. Smooth concrete surrounds courts. The word "bocce" comes from an Italian word which is plural, meaning "to bowl." The small white ball, the pallino, is thrown first to start game. Rules are very simple. Get your ball as close to the pallino as possible in order to score a point. If more balls of same color get closer, these additionally score points. Much like pool, bocce requires players to take turns. This makes it an ideal game for socializing in between turns. Often cheers or laughter can be heard. No one has an edge in bocce ball unless of course they have played for years. We generally play games to 12 points. Two games are played and take approximately 1-1/2 hours. First court winners stay and are challenged on second game by winners from the second court. We mix and match so no team is expert, and we change numbers on a team so no one is left out. The game of bocce ball requires no specific skills or previous experience. You will get a little exercise and enjoy a beautiful view and breezes at The Summit all while having a great time with a great group of people. If you are interested in learning the game, please join us at The Summit.
