FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | APRIL 2019 57 Ping Pong Fun, Fitness, Friendship Five club members (Mitch Harmon, Bob Smith, Bob Rubenstein, Rony Tordesillas, and Sandra Butler-Roberts) participated in the 2019 Palm Desert Senior Games & International Sports Festival Table Tennis events on Feb. 9. Sandi won a gold medal in women's doubles, and a silver medal in women's singles. Rony won a silver medal in mixed doubles and a bronze medal in men's singles. Congratulations! If you want to get back into ping pong and perhaps participate in next year's Senior Games, join us in the Multipurpose Room at The Courts. We have noticed curious observers standing outside the double glass doors watching us playing. Please come on in! There are paddles and balls available to use. Put on your athletic shoes and don't be afraid to join us. Remember, everyone who comes here says "it's been over 20 years since I've played." For those of you just getting started, or want to practice your skills, come in between 10 am and noon most weekdays. All skill levels show up and everyone helps each other. Thursday mornings we sometimes have an advanced player come in and help get you up to speed. You will learn that the game is now played to 11 points, with alternating two serves. When you want more of a challenge, come between 1 and 4 pm on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday for competitive rotation play. During these sessions we have a range of skill levels playing doubles. After a game is finished, one player rotates out and another player waiting in the kitchen area rotates in. You rotate around the table playing four games and then go back in the kitchen until the next space is open. When tables are not full, singles may be played using the player rotation system. This way everyone gets a chance to play with a variety of players and skill levels. On Tuesdays, we have advanced players playing doubles or singles from 2 to 4 pm. If you are interested in qualifying for advanced play, stop by at that time and talk to Don Fant. Now that you know how the schedule works, the next time you wander into The Courts and see folks playing ping pong, please feel welcome to come on in.
