18 | OHCC LIVING | JUNE 2019 | Village Squares Our first series of Round Dance classes finished at the beginning of May. While learning rhumba and cha-cha, we also learned that it is much easier to dance when the caller is telling you what step is next. Several of the ballroom dance club members joined us in May to practice the round dance waltz. While it is harder than the rhumba, we are having fun. Round dance is ballroom dances that are choreographed and cued by a caller. The dancers move in unison around the dance floor. The classes are on Thursday evening at 6:30 pm. Our square dance students are almost done with the Mainstream moves and the dancing becomes more fun as the moves become more complex. Next come the Mainstream Plus calls, which will take us into October. The club members joined the students after class on May 14, for a pizza party on the Lanai to celebrate getting through four months of training. If you are wondering what modern square dancing is all about, stop by AB Hall some Tuesday at 3 pm and watch the fun. A new class will start in January. Please check out our website at http://ohccvillagesquares.wix.com/ villagesquares. Along with a monthly calendar of events, there are also links to other club dances in the area, videos of all the dance moves the students are learning, pictures, and videos of our club events, and even a video of Sam, the square dancing dog. Any questions, please contact our president, Pete Cannon at OHCCVillageSquares@gmail.com. Line Dance Class - Mondays: Tai Lien, OHCC resident and club member, volunteers to teach our line dance class. Line dance is a fun way to exercise. The line dance class gives couples a chance to reinforce the steps and singles an opportunity to dance solo at the monthly dances. We meet in Abravanel Hall from 4:45 to 5:30 pm. It is free for Ballroom Dance Club members. Membership is $10, pay at the front desk. Lessons for Couples - Wednesdays: Ryan Lockhart and Danelle Newman, Area Dance Directors for Fred Astaire Dance Studios, teach our weekly classes in Abravanel Hall. Beginner class from 3 to 4 pm and Intermediate from 2 to 3 pm. It is $5 for club members, $7 for non- members, pay at the door. Round Dance - Thursdays: The Ballroom and Square Dance Clubs sponsor this class taught by Regina Aubrey. Dancers learn ballroom dance steps then dance in a circle while the steps are cued. We meet in Abravanel Hall from 6:30 to 8 pm. It is $5 per class. Our next dance is Fri., June 14. The June Black & White Dinner Dance is a highlight of the year. MusicStation will fill the room with beautiful music. Bobby's Hideaway will serve a delicious family style dinner. In addition, glammed up dancers will swirl around the dance floor. Last month's April in Paris dance was a lovely event. Dancers wore all the colors in a spring bouquet. The band, Alias, was outstanding. Madeleines and chocolate truffles made tasty treats.
