FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JULY 2019 57
Tennis Club
July looks like it's going to be a big month for The Tennis Club.
We're wrapped up June by combining our end-of-the-month Play
Day with our annual Red - Blue Team tournament. Traditionally
played on July 4th, this year having the competition on the Saturday
before Independence Day will allow the stinky participants to get
cleaned up before joining the Four Seasons Fourth of July celebration
and awards program. Chuck Beckman and Howard Lyon will be
coordinating the Red – Blue Tournament this year.
Then a couple of weeks later, the Club is adding a brand-new
event: The Summer Fun Doubles Tournament to be held on July
13th. This tournament will feature elimination matches structured
to eventually produce a culminating finals match between the top
two doubles teams. Actual real prizes donated by Howard and Louise
Lyon will be awarded to the winners. I'll drink to that! Stan Lam has
agreed to coordinate this inaugural tournament.
Another new (or remodeled) event for the Tennis Club is summer
evening doubles matches. Scheduled for the second and third
Wednesdays of the month, interested players will be able to sign up
and have matches and teams arranged. Matches will be scheduled for
6 and 7 pm, so even in the lingering summer heat, one hour of good
tennis will be worth suiting up for. Time permitting, each match will
be two sets, and in the event of split sets, a 10-point tie breaker will be
played. Winners get bragging rights until the next week.
Speaking of bragging rights, after a rough start, the Four Seasons
Beaumont United States Tennis Association (USTA) team has been
on a winning streak. After three matches out in Palm Desert, in
which we won one match and lost two, once we started playing at
home on The Courts, we have won two straight matches, winning
all three tiers' matches both times. The final match of the 6-match
league was June 9.
Also, back in June, The Tennis Club and Four Seasons honored the
late, long-time resident and tennis leader, Irve Sturner, with a plaque
on his favorite tennis court bench. Irve was instrumental in getting
the design and features of the courts at The Courts to be first class,
so this small memorial plaque acknowledging his contributions will
be a reminder to current and future players of his lasting impact. ~
