64 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | APRIL 2020 April and springtime are here. This is the best time of the year for us to play some Bocce Ball. Bocce Ball is played at The Summit on Tuesday, and Friday at 9 am. Everyone is welcome. New players are quickly introduced to the rules and best strategies. Our tournament grade courts and sideboards are surrounded by smooth concrete with small step-in. There are handicap accessible ramps and everyone helps to pick up the balls after a round. Teams are picked for each court by random draw. We are in the process of getting new surfaces installed on both courts within the next few months. I am also looking into getting two new Bocce Ball sets. The game of bocce ball requires no specific skills or previous experience. You will get a little exercise and enjoy a beautiful view and breezes at The Summit, all while having a great time with a great group of people. If you are interested in learning the game, please join us at The Summit. If you have questions, contact one of the following: Hank Negrete at (909) 747-7087 or Greg Stilson at (951) 267-1551. ~ Hank Negrete, hanknegrete16@ yahoo.com Bocce Ball As you read this article, spring has recently arrived and who doesn't enjoy being outside to enjoy the better weather? What better thing to do outside than to get a little exercise, fresh air and socialize with some of your fellow residents? Shuffleboard fits all of these criteria. We play on Monday and Saturday mornings at 9 am at the shuffleboard courts at The Lodge. We usually play two to three matches and these last from 60 to 90 minutes. So after your morning coffee and breakfast come on down to participate in this fun sport. Or, after working up an appetite, have breakfast at the Kopper Kettle Bistro after the game. This is an easy game to learn and your skill level will improve quickly if you have never played this game before, or maybe you need a refresher. We are always looking for new people to join us in this friendly, but competitive game. Each time that we play, we choose different teams, so that you are always playing with different partners. This way we get to socialize with friends and meet other fellow residents during our morning play. The winning team is the first team to reach the score of 75. Did you know that the game of shuffleboard originated in the 15th century in England, where folks played a game of sliding a large British coin, called a groat, down a table? The game was called shove groat or slide groat. Later, a silver penny was used and the name of the game became shove-penny or shovel-penny. This game was played by people of all ages and was a favorite pastime in the great country houses of Staffordshire, Winchester and Wiltshire, England. We hope to see you on Monday and/or Saturday mornings at 9 am sharp.
