32 | OHCC LIVING | SEPTEMBER 2020 | Swim, Surf & Wellness We hope that everyone is continuing to stay active and maintaining a healthy lifestyle during these recent uncertain times. While many of us have stress and anxiety over the pandemic, we should remind ourselves of those things we enjoy and of the constants in our lives. We are so fortunate to live in our beautifully landscaped community — particularly access to our golf course, outdoor sports courts, and our pristine swimming pool. This month we are focusing on aqua exercising. Now that we have four pool areas open — three lap lanes and one "float and stretch" area; we encourage you all to get creative with your aqua exercising, so grab some foam dumbbells, a noodle, or a Smart Bell,™ to enhance your aqua exercise during your 30-miniute pool time. How great is water exercise? Leesa Singer (pictured), instructor of our Aqua Aerobatics offers these pointers: Done correctly, aqua workouts can give you gains, like those on land, including aerobic fitness, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, and better balance. According to Leesa, water's buoyancy supports your weight. When you are submersed up to your neck, the water cancels out about 90 percent of your body weight, significantly reducing stress on your weight-bearing joints, bones, and muscles. Instead of landing on a hard surface with the impact of your full weight, you land with only 10 percent of your bodyweight. This reduces risk of injury. Leesa recommends you start with water walking in water that is about waist-high, and walk across the pool swinging your arms like you do when walking on land. Avoid walking on your tiptoes and keep your back straight. Tighten your abdominal muscles to avoid leaning too far forward or to the side. To increase resistance as your hands and arms move through the water, wear hand webs or other resistance devices, e.g. pool dumbbells, or noodle, etc. Water shoes can help you maintain traction on the bottom of the pool. Once you are comfortable walking waist-high, try walking in deeper water. As you walk, swing your arms. For a more intense workout, consider jogging in deep water. Aqua workouts can help you reach your fitness goals without pain or injury. They can add cross-training variety to your existing exercise routines or offer a safe and fun way to start an exercise. Swim, Surf, & Wellness Club Secretary, Layne Strelic who is an avid aqua exerciser, had this to say about her husband, Don Strelic (pictured, in the pool), improving his golf game, which was hitting an all-time low. "He had short hits, nowhere near the target. Leesa suggested he participate in the water exercise class. Although he was only able to join four classes with Leesa before the pandemic hit, since the pool has reopened he is working out with me in the float and stretch area of the pool and we are amazed as to his improvements with his golf score."
