| OHCC LIVING | NOVEMBER 2020 | 29 Just in case: Check with your club contact to confirm meeting place, date, and time. Welcome to November! It is the month when we celebrate Thanksgiving, and we all have much for which we should be thankful. Yes, we are still in the midst of an incredible pandemic, but how lucky are we to wake up each morning in a wonderful community that is our own "touch of paradise?" There are no bombs raining on our heads. We have access to fresh food, hot and cold running water, and while we may have anxious dreams, we are sleeping in beds and not on the sidewalk. Although we may be staying at home and socially distancing, we can easily reach friends and family by phone, by email and by Zoom. Our TVs have more channels and shows available than we will ever be able watch! Just recently, we have also finally been able to start enjoying the use of our pool, fitness center and golf course. We hope that everyone takes a moment to think about all the things for which they are thankful. Know that we are very thankful for our Club and our members. We continue to look forward to the end of this pandemic and to the day when we can conduct our monthly meetings and wonderful day trips. Until then, please continue to stay safe, and we are sending you our very best wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving! ~ Your Travel Club Board: Judy Harris, Donna Wessel- Graham, Lynn Opelka, Callie Dean, and Judy Buoniconti Travel Club Alas, as we head into the holiday season, we are still very limited as to what we can do, both as a club and as a community. Will we be able to get together with family over the holidays? It will not be without risk if we do. A traditional Thanksgiving feast, with its vast variety of foods and flavors, presents a unique challenge when it comes to choosing a wine or wines to accompany the meal. While it is always a good idea to keep in mind that the best wine to pair with a meal is wine you enjoy, there are some good rules of thumb that you can use when deciding what wine to pair with your Thanksgiving dinner. Generally, lighter, lower alcohol wines pair better with a Thanksgiving menu than fuller-bodied wines such as Chardonnay or Cabernet Sauvignon. For white wine lovers that means Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio or Riesling. For red wine aficionados, good choices include Pinot Noir, Beaujolais or Zinfandel, or Côtes du Rhône rouge. Increasingly popular in recent years, Rosé is crisp, light and fruity. It is a good counterpoint to the heavy Thanksgiving meal and bridges the gap between red and white. If you only want to serve one type of wine with your meal, the best choice would be a sparkling wine, such as Prosecco or Champagne, as they bring both an element of celebration to your table and have wonderful food-pairing versatility. At the end of the dinner offering a dessert wine with your pie can be the perfect final touch. Dessert wines include Muscat, Port, Sauternes or any late harvest wine. Salut! The OHCC Wine Tasting Club is made up of a dozen or so groups. Each group has monthly tastings in a member's home, with different wines being presented. Unfortunately, COVID-19 has made this impossible for the time being, although some groups are still meeting via Zoom. Wine Tasting Club
