Birdwatchers
Guajome Park in Oceanside is a great place to go to any time of
year. Spring is especially fun when baby mallards and American
coots are being fed by their mother at the lake. Various domestic
geese and common gallinules join the large numbers of mallards
and coots interacting with the human visitors feeding them. Look
for several wintering ducks that may not have flown north yet. The
shrubs and trees have many birds including hooded orioles, Western
bluebirds, red-winged blackbirds, Nuttall's and acorn woodpeckers,
egrets, cormorants, great-tailed grackles, song sparrows, lesser
goldfinches, and cal towhees to name a few. Keep your eyes open for
many other birds.
Besides birds and walking around the lake there is a nature trail
and a few other trails in the park. There is a bench here and there
and restrooms. The entrance fee is $3 or use your SD parking pass.
An alternative is to park on Guajome Lake Rd., a little bit up from the
main entrance at the camper's gate, and walk in. The ranger station
is on the right where you can get the free county pass that is good for
all San Diego county parks.
Note, the Birdwatchers Club will have to disband unless someone
comes forward to be the Club President. You do not have to know the
birds. Please call Jane Johnson to volunteer at (419) 215-1814.
