| OHCC LIVING | MAY 2021 | 33 Billiards/Pool – What A Great Game! Written by Billiards Club Member Don Farmer There are so many variations of this sport, and, yes, this is a sport. It would be impossible to cover them all in one Billiards Club article. So, I'll give a little background on myself, how my love of the sport developed over the years, and what game I have come to enjoy the most here at OHCC. I was born and raised in the Midwest, in Kansas City, Missouri. I grew up playing a number of sports, but at the time baseball was my favorite. I spent quite a few hours in Little League and it wasn't until high school that I discovered that the community center we played at had a basement with six pool tables. Those tables drew me in like a magnet. In just one visit to this wonderland, I was hooked. Many more hours were spent there, cue in hand, developing my skill. Then came the US Navy and a move to the West Coast. For a while my new life didn't give me time to pursue my love of the game — not too many pool tables on submarines. A big change happened when I was overcome by another love; her name is Kat, a beautiful lady and my wife of 49 years. Raising a family and completing a Navy career of 30 years took most of my time. After the Navy we built our dream retirement home in East County SD. But, alas, time moved on and we decided to move closer to services and medical facilities. That's when we discovered OHCC. What a find! One trip through the Clubhouse and seeing the Billiards Room, and well, the houses here could have been built out of pallets. In 2005, we moved in. After joining the Billiards Club, I started playing and honing my game. Then I met a gentleman by the name of David Knee. His passion was playing a pool game called "Golf." I soon became addicted to this simple, but challenging game. It can be played with two to four players. Each player is assigned their own ball throughout the game. The idea is to shoot your ball into each pocket, starting with the number one pocket and then moving around the table clockwise until sinking your ball in the final pocket – six pockets in all. There are fouls that come into play for not hitting your ball or hitting your opponent's ball first. These can send you back a pocket if you acquire five fouls or strike your opponent's ball first. Rest assured, those you are playing against will help you accumulate fouls. There are several variations of this game, all of which are fun and challenging, but the best way to learn "Golf " billiards is to come down to the Clubhouse (when opened up again) and attend a club lesson. Until then you'll have to be content watching a YouTube video on pool and imagining the sweet feel of a cue in your hand. Billiards We hope that you are enjoying our beautiful spring weather and some of the activities at Ocean Hills that have become available with our progressive reopening plans. There have been several loyal aerobics members participating in our instructor's Zoom aerobics classes on Mondays and Wednesdays. Each class is 10 to 11 am and includes a warm up, cardio, weights, and a cool down. Students are encouraged to work at their own level of fitness. The instructor teaches the students how to perform an activity at a beginning, intermediate, and advanced level. The cost of each class is $5. If you would like to join in a class please contact Margie Raisigel (sungee@pacbell.net). Aerobics If it is warm outside, take a walk and enjoy the California sunshine. So, please remember to exercise a few times each week so you can stay healthy and feel your best. Also, you can exercise with our OHCC Instructors right from your own home and use YouTube videos. Here are two suggestions for you to exercise in your own home with our very own Ocean Hills Senior Fitness instructors Cheryl Todd and Tatis Cervantes-Aiken. It is free and all you need is a sturdy folding chair. These Chair Yoga exercises each last approximately one hour. Instructions: Go to the URL line on your computer. Type in YOUTUBE.COM/ HARMONYGROVEYOGA and you will get a video with Cheryl Todd teaching her Chair yoga class. Just follow her example using a sturdy chair. She has several videos to choose from so take your pick. Go to the URL line on your computer. Type in TATISCERVANTES and you will see her Lively Chair Yoga Class with Tatis Cervantes- Aiken. Sit in your sturdy chair and start the chair yoga exercise. She lives in Ocean Hills, as a resident, so you may see her around on your walks. We hope the Clubhouse Abravanel Hall will be open to approximately 100 users in the near future and the time permitted will be determined by staff. Right now it will be available only for Master and Village Board and Committee meetings. We will let you know by email when our Sr. Fitness class will be allowed to use it with our Instructors Cheryl and Tatis for Chair Yoga. Senior Fitness Club
