It is the story of a young orphan girl in the last 1800's adopted by a farming family on remote Prince Edward Island, based on the Canadian children's book "Anne of Green Gables." Although humorous and heartwarming, the episodes tackle surprisingly sophisticated topics, including feminism, homosexuality and native peoples' rights. I don't recall reading this book as a child, but just might give it a try, since I enjoyed the series so much. Lupin (Netflix, 10 episodes, last five coming this summer) The protagonist in this series styles himself a "gentleman burglar," after a famous series of French books. It was filmed in French but dubbed into English. The dubbing is very skillfully done and not at all annoying, In fact, I was halfway through the first episode before I realized it. The overarching story is of the protagonist trying to clear his father who was wrongfully accused of a crime. Each episode leads him one step closer to solving the mystery through a series of skillful disguises and cleverly twisting plots. The Queen's Gambit (Netflix, seven episodes) Yes, it's about chess, but it could be any game or sport, like tennis, swimming or football, at which the protagonist excels. A young orphan girl leaves the orphanage to succeed in the world of championship chess, a classic rags-to-riches story, but oh, what a story and what beautiful clothing and sets. Give your eyes a treat and your heartstrings a pull. I highly recommend the book as well.
