What a beautiful day - sun was bright, air was comfortable, skies were blue, and wind was calm. On April 24, after a long dry spell, our Swing Into Spring Doubles Tennis Tournament actually became a reality! Twenty of our club members participated in this competitive, but fun tournament. Two groups of five teams each (with two players to a team) played in a round-robin format against the other four teams in the same group. The teams in each group that won the highest number of games then advanced to the final championship match playing the top team from the other group. The teams of Laura Emerson/Chuck Beckman and Dennis Gunnarson/Alex Castanon ended up playing in the finals match, with the Emerson/Beckman team emerging as the winner. Runner-up teams from the two groups were Michele Flaherty/Stan Lam and Marty Key/Paul Ko, respectively. All participants had a great time (at least that's what I was told) playing tennis and catching up with long-lost friends, despite the fact that all COVID protocols were still being observed during the entire tournament. The event was run very smoothly and was a total success. Hopefully that may signify that our lives are starting to return to normal (or new normal, if you will). Special thanks to Lizzie Gallegos who spearheaded this event, and the organizing committee which was comprised of Liliana Simanton, Nancy Walker, Chuck Beckman and yours truly. Other volunteers who helped throughout the tournament included Julie Stayner, Laura Emerson, Tito Calderon, Josie Beauchamp, Patti Brock and Doug Streuber. Generous donations were also made by Michele Flaherty (yummy cookies), Howard Levine (coveted medals), and Sheryl Beckman (professional photography). NEWS FLASH! As if the tournament itself was not exciting enough, Brian Flowers decided to sprain his ankle during his very first match. Fortunately, we had our resident medic team of Lizzie Gallegos and Tim Jones (think Hot Lips and Hawkeye of MASH) who rushed to the scene and treated Brian with top-notch medical care. (Although I personally think that Brian was just faking the injury to get out of doing household chores. Just kidding, Brian.) Nevertheless, everyone did a marvelous job in helping make this fantastic tournament happen. Without their tireless effort, this event would not have been possible.
